Hey all:

My machine is breaking down in its old age (purchased 2006). I have dual screens but the issue occurs with one or two cinema displays plugged in. Playing video or leaving the computer running long causes a KP (I believe) and the monitors shut off. My unprofessional diagnosis is that my video card has gone to sh** and overheats, this and that. The fan does get very loud. I cannot turn the monitors back on without a hard restart. As a video editor this is hindering my ability to do, well, anything...

Is it time to get a new video card (if that is likely to be the issue) and any recommendations if so?

[ I have had a tech savvy friend clean up some tangled permissions and install new drivers, but to no avail]

Thanks for your time!

Test using another OS install either from re-installing yours fresh and starting over or using an external. Let it idle for a while and see is it can be stable. If so, you have your answer. But if not then work on fixing the HW. Maybe a new aftermarket cooler for the X1900 or a 5770 upgrade?

Try removing the video card and resecuring it. It could be loose, especially if this problem started occurring after moving your comp
