Possible light leakage or problem with screen

Hi all,

Just today, I suddenly noticed a problem with my iBook screen. When viewed from an angle, there appears to be a smudge or hazy mark down near the middle of the screen to almost the bottom. You can't see it when staring straight at the screen, which I usually am. Someone else was using my iBook briefly today, and I had the opportunity to see the screen from an angle. It's not fingerprints (though it looks somewhat like a very long one), because it doesn't come off and you can't reallly see it from the front.

It's easiest to see against a white background, like a Word document, and is uneven down the screen.

Any thoughts?

I could be wrong but this sounds like the display problem on some PowerBook's and iBook G4's when the screen gets white spots (see pic below.) If you want it fixing then the best bet is to probably send it back to Apple for a screen replacement. But it might be expensive. Although, this might not be the problem with your screen. Any other people?

Why yes, that does look familar. Not quite as obviously visible, but it looks something like that.

one other thing: I'd never noticed this until recently, because i'd never done anything to cause me to notice it, but if the back of the screen is pushed in the same area as where the smudges are, the display does that LCD squiggle/ripple thing. It does not do this in any other part of the screen (like any of the corners of the screen, for example).

Don't worry about the whole pushing screen thing. My PowerBook G4 does that only in the middle and the screen is fine. I think it does this because it is in a way the bit of the back of the screen that you can easily push. If you try and push the sides they are a bit stiffer.

Interesting. My only concern is that it happens in roughly the same area that the light leakage (or whatever it is) is occurring.

It's not something that would make me get rid of my iBook or make me stop using it. I would be concerned about its resale value being affected, however.

Since the pushing dots of fun on the Powerbook (mine included) were caused by misplaced/poor quality backing foam on the LCD's I assume you iBook either has a misaligned screen bezel or has some form of backing problem too.

I've not seen that before in a iBook but I bet it could happen.

Do you travel with it in a bag often?

I do. I have a nice and padded backpack for it, and it fits pretty well inside.

fortunately for me, I have an apple store nearby (two, actually). i should probably take it down there.

Hi

While I do not have the computer you have.. or experience with that specific model.. I have owned a ton of pc based laptops.. most manufacturers consider a certain amount of "bright spots" and dead pixels to be "normal" they have different guidelines for this of course varying on manufacturer..

With LCD it is very often hard to avoid getting the odd stuck pixel or bright spot. I have seen many in my time.. however a whole screen full would certainly not be normal.

I currently have 3 bright spots on my p4 laptop and I have noticed two very small ones on this G3 iBook.

I think its excellent that apple would address it or repair it.. as most PC manufacturers seem to be very cavalier about this and its long been a pet peeve of mine.
