Just wondering if it is possible to get a 16GB iPad,

Swap out the flash storage chip with a new one (larger capacity) and throw it back together.

If so where can you get such flash chips?

and are there any online guides?

(i've looked, not found anything, just wondering if anyone has any ideas)

My basic plan

Buy 16GB 3g+wifi iPad

Swap out storage for 64Gb, and i'm happy.

Possible?

Not unless you're amazing at soldering ;)

I would think there are several things to consider;
1. Your are willing to put your Dad on the spot for something he 'might' be able to do.
2. You are willing to go without a warranty.
3. You are willing to 'Brick' your iPad.
4. You are unwilling or unable to find a way to earn the money to just buy the model you want.

Im all for you getting right in there & doing it if thats what you want to do but it just sounds like more trouble than it would be worth once you add in the cost of parts & your time & effort.

If you do it I wish you luck & hope you'll report back here with the outcome. Id sure like to hear how it went & hope you'll take pictures of your progress...:D

No.

The memory is not a separate chip. It is actually packaged into a single unit with the CPU to save on space and power needs.

don't attempt it. 99% chance it wont work. you're gonna trash your ipad. it will cost you more to buy a new one than the extra money you would have spent to just buy the model you want in the first place. im all for DIY, but there are limitations, this is one of them.

If you want more storage, there are a few services specifically for this. For example, if you get 16GB and want 64GB, you have to do this:

1.) Sell your on Ebay/Craiglist, whatever.

2.) Buy one with more storage.

OR

1.) An average iPad grows 1GB additional storage in every quarter. If you wait three years, your iPad's storage will reach 64GB, provided that you give it all the water, food and nourishment that it requires. Humidity also has to be controlled.

2.) Sell your iPad as previously outlined. After all, it is an old iPad with water damage, so why keep it?!

3.) Put a bit more money into the pot and buy a new one with enough storage.

You left one out.

4.) Find a friend with larger iPad and cross-breed it with yours. Two thirds of the offspring will have more memory than yours.

I've had problems determining both the gestation period and average litter size.... Also, until they mature, you'll be stuck with iPod Touches ;)
