Hello, for the M3 Pro and M3 Max MacBook Pro 16", the minimum is 18GB and the next step up is 36GB. I read that Apple might increase the minimum RAM configuration for all M4-based Macs to 16GB. Does that mean the next step up will be 32GB instead of the current 36GB? Kind of downgrade.

The rumours is that the base M4 will start with 16gb, so highly likely that the Pro will start with 32gb and have the option for 48gb, Max starting at 48/64gb. Hopefully they adjust the SSD prices while they’re at it…

I personally don’t think that they will increase the base RAM on the pro and max chips to 32 / 36. I could maybe see them doing 24GB RAM so that it’s a tad bit more than the 16GB RAM that’s rumored for the base M4. Although not a huge jump, they did just jump from 16GB to 18GB base on the pro and max chip last year, so I would be kinda surprised if they increased again, all the way to 32 / 36.

Yeah that sounds sensible, 32 does seem like a big leap, maybe 24gb for Pro and 48gb for Max to start?

If I recall correctly, they had 1TB SSD in the Pro pre-configured base model but not the current ones anymore. Can anybody confirm?

Back to school promotion ends today. If the memory of the next step up from the base model of M4 Pro/Max drops from 36GB to 32GB, I won’t be very happy. I know I need more than 18GB for running Windows applications but 64GB may be overkilled.

64GB would certainly future proof it for a good amount of time

I got 64GB for my PC built 8 years ago but I have never used more than 32GB. However, if I want to replace it with a MacBook Pro running one Windows virtual machine, I may need more.
