I don't even know if this will work but...I have a Philips MMS460 5.1 PC speaker system laying around. Is there anyway that I could hook it up to the AppleTV to use as a speaker system? I honestly don't know what quality to expect out of it, but I'm not in the market to get a home theater speaker system (be it "boxed" or "piecemeal with a receiver and speakers") any time soon and this is just collecting dust. Figured I'd see what is possible.
The Philips MMS460 system uses 3.5 mm hookups and obviously the AppleTV uses digital optical out. I have done some research and found various optical to 3.5mm cables but they have been 1:1, the MMS460 needs three 3.5mm, for the front, surround, and sub.
I think if this were to work I would need to run the optical out signal through a sound processor or splitter of some sort in order to split the optical signal (presumably digital) into the three 3.5mm cables (presumably analog). So far all optical audio converters I have found have not supported more than 2 channels.
I'm not really sure if this is even worth it, but again I have the sound system collecting dust and figured I might at least try to use it.
