Is there any way to set my sound so that it WON'T switch to HDMI when I plug in my extra monitor?

I frequently plug my MBP into my extra monitor at my desk but I'm also always carrying it to meetings. My monitor is HDMI but doesn't have a headphone jack. So every time I plug in my monitor, the Sound switches to HDMI and I have to go into sound prefs and switch it back to the local headphone port.

I don't know a way to set a preference, however here are a couple of suggestions. It appears to me that the last thing plugged in wins. So, if you plug in the HDMI monitor, then plug in your headset, the headset will be the output device.

Also, if you have the volume icon enabled on the toolbar, you can option-click it to choose the output device rather than having to open up the preferences pane.
