.exe files cannot execute in native OS X. If you're not booting into Windows via Boot Camp, you can use a virtual machine, such as Parallels. You'll still need to install Windows in your virtual machine.

You have two options,
Wine, which you don't need Windows, but is very limited in what apps actually work. Codewevers as mentioned above is this process.

the other option is virtualization, either Parallels, or VMware, in this case you're running windows inside OS X, so you'll need your own copy of windows.

I prefer Vmware, but that's just me.

Second VMware.

However, I was using an old version of it that no longer works with Yosemite. So, I switched over to VirtualBox. Works for my needs, free, not as polished as VMware, but free and works.

Parallel or fusion work well on the mac. You can do all kinds of freaky integration where the window apps integrate with the desktop and dock, I prefer to keep it all in it's own separate window.

You can back up the image files for the vm too as they sit in a mac folder.
