I have Silence Unknown Callers enabled, which is great. However, I still get banner notifications for each such call, which are annoying. Is there a way to opt out of banner notifications for silenced unknown callers while still getting banner / on-screen notifications for incoming calls for known callers?

Thanks for all feedback.

Look in your Phone App, they now have Never -- Ask Reason for Calling -- Silence (Calls from unsaved numbers will be silenced, sent to voicemail, and displayed on the Recents list.

I have iOS 26 and have those enabled and aren't getting them at all.

Thanks. I hadn’t researched the new call screening feature enough to know whether or not I want to activate it. E.g., are spammers just saying a name so the call then rings? If so, not a big improvement for me, since I get bombarded with junk calls. Thanks.

Honestly, I'll have to pay more attention to this.

I hope this feature once they get to that prompt will just give up HAHA. Otherwise I will just silence who I don't know and who isn't in my address book will just be forwarded to VM. and will show as a missed call.

Between this feature and Verizon’s Call Filter app, my junk calls that make it through have fallen to almost zero. In my experience, ones that make it past VZW’s filter and hit screening almost always drop the call immediately before a word is even spoken.

Great to hear. Do you still get the banner notifications for the calls that are silenced or blocked?

Every now and again I’ll see the Dynamic Island display that a call is being screened, but as I mentioned above, the call usually ends before the transcription process even begins so it’s a pretty unobtrusive process IMO.

Thanks. If a call is screened and the caller gives a name (or maybe says anything at all?), I assume the phone then audibly rings? There’s probably an Apple demo video that I haven’t seen. Thanks again.

Correct. Unless you have selected the full “silence” option for call screening, once the transcription begins on screen the phone will ring. I have it set to “ask reason for calling”. When I had it set to full silence, I don’t recall receiving any notifications and was actually surprised to see a call or two show up there when I went into the phone app to place a call.

Thanks very much for posting this. One last question: Do all screened calls still show up in the Phone app?

I like these new calling features from Apple. However, I do wish the likes of doctor offices and such, merely sent a text to confirm appointments (some do) and send results, etcetera.

I do not have the likes of doctor numbers and such in my address book. Thus, it is a challenge to use the feature to ignore "those not in my address book"...

I have a pixel and an iPhone, the pixel screening works so much better as you can opt to screen it, so expected phone calls can get through easier, and you aren't spammed with random "Voicemails".

Silence Unknown Callers was a big step forward, but as I’ve submitted to Apple for several years now, it would be better if you could quickly toggle it on or off — or, better yet, “turn off for 15 minutes” — from the Phone app rather than in Settings, for times when a driver or delivery person might be calling.

I thought of one other question: If Call Screening is enabled, do callers hear any rings before the screening begins? I’m out of the country a lot, which callers often can figure out just from the type of ring they hear. Curious how Call Screening works. Thanks again for all of the replies.

TBH I prefer the option of sending it to be screened. 90% of my non-spam phone calls are from unknown numbers, doctors appointments etc. If I silenced all unknown numbers, I would never get any calls.

How does this option work if you don’t have your phone in hand? Such calls ring by default?

The phone rings and you can either answer, decline or screen. You can also silence unknown numbers but that doesn’t work well for me as most legit calls I get aren’t saved in my contacts. The pixel does identify the number though, I.e. it says business name. That’s way more useful than apple’s implementation
