I have a 3GS currently running iOS 6.1 (10B141). It's not jailbroken. I'd like to update it to 6.1.2 and then jailbreak it. I'm aware that a tethered method exists for 6.1.3 but I'm interested in an untethered jailbreak.

I've downloaded a 6.1.2 restore image and the evasion tool. Assuming it is possible, are there any special steps that need to be taken?

I never updated it to 6.1.2. Does this mean my only options are an untethered jailbreak of 6.1 or a tethered jailbreak of 6.1.3?

You don't have to be on 6.1.2 or a specific firmware to save the blobs, it does need to be signed at that time. If you did not save the SHSH for 6.1.2 manually you cannot restore to it.

So yes it is either 6.1 or the 6.1.3 tethered unless have an oldbootrom 3GS in which case 6.1.3 will be untethered as well.
