I still use a 23" LCD I got in around 2005 - works fine for my purposes.

I know there's an HDMI on the base video card for the new Mac Pro, is there any reason it wouldn't work?

Should work fine.

Just got the Mac Pro today... monitor doesn't work.

Screen says 'Out of range: 65 KHZ h frequency, 60 HZ v frequency' (i think)

It must not support the video card output?

Specs:

Seems like 60hz refresh is fine, i've never seen anything about the other frequency.. if its trying to output a different resolution that shouldn't keep it from running..

Edit: from the manual - Input Signal Video Sync RGB analog (0.7/1.0 Vp-p, 75 ohms) / TMDS Digital (100ohms) Separate Sync, fh:30-82 kHz, fv:50-85 Hz

So that's not 'out of range'...

Broken video card?

My Mac Pro with base 580 gpu was delivered today. HDMI output didn’t get a picture at first boot when I plugged either 580 HDMI output to my old AV receiver connected to a 1080p TV. Sound prompts from the first-boot language selection were playing through the HDMI connection though.

I moved the Mac Pro through to my main PC room, and it connected fine via HDMI to a Dell ultrawide monitor.

I have a usbc->HDMI adapter somewhere - I’ll try my AV receiver again once I find it.

I borrowed a newer monitor from a friend and it worked over HDMI.

Just some old spec incompatibility or something which is exactly what I was hoping to avoid.. now I need to buy a monitor too.

For reference, I tracked down the manual. On page 21 it lists the supported resolutions. My guess is that the monitor only supports a specific set of horizontal/vertical frequency combinations, and whatever the 580X is defaulting to, the monitor doesn't like it.

Now, that monitor supports VGA and DVI-D connections. How are you connecting the Mac Pro to the monitor? Are you using an HDMI to DVI-D adapter? If so, for curiosity's sake it'd be interesting to see if an HDMI to VGA adapter would work better.

As a final comment, note that the max resolution of your display is 1680x1050. Font rendering at that resolution in Catalina is going to be awful. I'm using a Dell U2413 at 1920x1200 and it's bad. This is a well-known problem with more recent versions of MacOS. Even forcibly enabling sub-pixel rendering just barely helps. What Mac are you coming from? If it's an older one then you may be in for a shock as far as font rendering is concerned. (My old system is a Mac Pro 2008 running El Capitan which is before Apple's font rendering changes, so it's really apparent to me.)
