Hey all, I am possibly looking for a Mac Pro. I am wondering how far back I can go while still maintaining an Intel processor, or at least be able to update to the most recent update from Apple.

I would like something of this type:

I won't be used heavily for any major editing things or things requiring a lot of processing power, but I would like one just for word processing and web surfing.

Any suggestions of what to look for or where?

I'm not sure I would go with the oldest that is compatible with Mavericks. You might want to go a little newer than that just so there's a chance it will get OS upgrades longer.

To be honest, I'm not overly worried as I believe my girlfriend is on like Snow Leopard without any issues. But I would like to stay up to Snow Lion, or Mountain Lion (I forget which is the newest, so I apologize here) so I can continue to use Chrome and such programs.

hmm, all Macs desktop and notebooks uses Intel processors. And for you needs, unless the Tower Mac Pro is cheaper then a new iMac, I see little reason to get the Tower Mac Pro

You're talking about all the current ones? I'm looking at the older ones.

Yeah, cause it'll depend on how much cheaper you're getting the tower Mac Pro compared to just buying a new iMac.

They need 64 bit support, and the early intel Macs like the Mini, some Macbooks and iMacs have coreduo or core2duo chips that dont have 64 bit.
Those machines are so old now that it is hardly worth looking at them.
(especially the old overheating iMacs!)

Various older year models can be found by "Scrumpymacs" on Ebay. They come pre-updated with various options. I was originally looking at them myself. He also gets his Graphic Cards from Mac Vid cards so they will be EFI modded.

I think he is in the UK though.

No idea of his reputation other than his seller rating though.

Where are you based?

I'm in the United States, Wisconsin to be exact, so shipping there might be a bit of a pain lol

I'm thinking to get exactly what I want I'm going to need to build up a bit more of a budget.

Mavericks compatibility is not so much about the flavor of the processor, but on the EFI and the graphics card. Mavericks needs EFI64.

A powermac G5 can only run up to 10.5.8. No Chrome for you. iTunes 10.6.3, Safari 5.0.6, iWork '09, iLife '09...
