There is a similar topic opened... But without the specs I thought. This is mine...
Pentium 3 800MHz; 512 megabytes of RAM; 3 harddisks (one of 40 gigabytes for system and two of 500 gigabytes in raid1); runs Ubuntu server 8.10
functions:
-File sharing
-Picture-and-photo-dump-space
-MT-Daapd (aka firefly aka an iTunes server)
-simple webserver for testing some things

Hey mate, i dont suppose you would be kind enough to share how you got your server to do all this on a mac network would you?
What does a server do that a NAS box doesn't do?
My brother got a HP that he's not using, and he said that he'd make a server out of it, and then he said he just bought a 2TB NAS box.
I guess it'll just be a HTPC but he'll run a Linux Server onto it.

Baiscally how that box is setup, how u got firefly to work etc etc. I tried and failed.
Well actually it is simple, in your terminal (ssh to you linux box) run

apt-get install mt-daapdNow make a directory (it should be a Samba or Avahi (this is Bonjour for linux) share), put all your music in it
Then go with your favorite browser to http://<your server ip>:3689
so http://192.168.0.100:3689/ in my case, login with the default settings (admin as username, mt-daapd as password), click in the menu on the left at configuration and give the path of you folder with your music and set some other parameters if you want.
go back to the server status page and click start scan (this you'll have to do each time you add new songs)
Open iTunes and let iTunes look up for shared libraries (in preferences), after all this there should be a shared library default called Firefly svn-<version number>

there are some advantages of a server, like VPN connections: when abroad, you can access your server directly via an encrypted (tunneled) connection

Well, we already have a wireless printer connected to our router. And the server, if it goes anywhere, will literally be 10 feet away from the router. So I don't think that attaching the printer to it would help .
I guess my brother would want a server because of his work (I don't see WHY though). He's a manager at a UPS store that my dad owns, and works there full time. I guess if he wants to access files from work at home, he can upload the files to our home server (If that's possible).

sure everything is possible with a server
via ftp, vpn, ... he can do it
I needed practice with Visio so that I could get better at mapping out customer's networks.
So this is wildly overkill, but gets the point across.
In May, a new Mini will enter the picture. And if a netbook really happens, I might take a close look at it as well.
As far as the rest of the specs go:
dc7800 = VIClient / Management Console
- Normal desktop stuff
xw9300 = VMWare ESXi hosting CentOS, Server 2003, Server 2008 environments.
1x 36 GB U320 boot drive, 1x 146 GB U320 storage for VMs
2x Opteron 275, 6 GB Memory
Shuttle = will become full time web-server, eventually hosting home automation websites/weather info/etc.
SSD drive to experiment with. Currently has Win7 beta, but will be formatted soon to take on webserver role
nw8440 = work PC
The Mini is my daily driver, the other stuff gets turned on when needed.
