I'm as enthusiastic as you are with daytime photo quality, but I'd be thoroughly lying if I said I didn't miss the ability to zoom in. The 2x is rather gritty under most circumstances, and anything beyond that comes out looking like it was taken with a Gameboy camera. Makes me yearn for a Pro to some degree, but I can't wrap my head around the added weight + features I would never take advantage of. Not worth it for me.

Missing the mini form factor, but out with the old.

I agree with the zoom, 2x is fine but after that quality falls off fast! I did post a 10x moon shot yesterday further back in here, not great as I expected. Also a night mode shot which wasn’t bad of the stars and better than I was expecting.

The zoom on the 16e must be better than you had on the mini?

It’s comparable yeah, I had a 15 Pro for some time as well and I ditched it because I didn’t know (or care to learn) all it had to offer. I did know how to click the zoom buttons, though. Apples to oranges after all for sure, lol.

Ok well yeah if you’ve had a 15 Pro then the zoom isn’t comparable lol with the dedicated 3x lens on it.

I also had a 15 Pro before I damaged it beyond repair 🙈 then used an iPhone 8 for a few months before getting the 16e, massive upgrade over the 8! 🤣

Your photos are gorgeous! I'm impressed with the camera on the 16e, but more impressed by your photography skills. Your dog is adorable.
Thank you! Always taking photos 😀 obviously I agree with you that my dog is adorable ❤️😆

Has anyone got any experience of going to the 16e from the 13 Mini?

I have the 13 Mini and I love it, particularly the size. But small phones are dead now and I’m wondering about upgrading to the 16e, mainly for the battery life as the Mini is not great for this. I’m generally a light phone user and mainly use it for messaging, Apple Music, light browsing on Safari and day-to-day photography. I’m absolutely not a photographer, so the Pro lineup is no use to me. Not too bothered about Dynamic Island - my wife has the 15 and apart from the camera it just doesn’t appeal to me.

16e seems perfect for me - but I do worry about the camera and whether it’s going to be much of an upgrade from my current phone.

Alternative is to wait for the 17 to come out and grab a 16 if it comes down in price.

There are a few who have come from the 13 Mini’s (not me) maybe they can give you their experience.

Obviously the 16e is a bit larger and heavier. You’ll notice a huge difference in battery life (really surprised me) it’s been excellent.

You will lose the ultra wide camera from the 13 Mini but the main camera on the 16e will perform much better. Shots are 24mp stock with the ability to shoot in HEIF max resolution 48mp, so a lot more detail in each photo. Dynamic range will also be improved with HDR 5. Also 2x zoom/crop into the centre of the 48mp image, which the 13 Mini cannot do.

Also 3 generations newer A18 chip and more RAM.

I personally think it’ll be a good choice for you! The 16e is the smallest device you can get from Apple now.

Thanks for the detailed response. I like to keep my phones for a few years and would be more than happy to keep my 13 Mini but for the battery starting to struggle. So it’s important for me that I’m not taking a backward step with an upgrade. Seems like all I’d lose is the ultra wide camera - I was worried that the camera would otherwise be very similar or even worse than what I have now.

If you like your 13 Mini so much, how about replacing its battery instead of buying new phone?

Well as has already been suggested, maybe get a battery service at Apple and keep your 13 Mini? 😁 I suppose having less features you could call losing the ultra wide camera a downgrade, but an upgrade with the main camera on the 16e.

Your photos look so much better than what I can do on my 15P.
Really? I did get some amazing shots from my 15 Pro. The main lens results from the 16e is on par with the 15 Pro imo especially in daylight, obviously a much more versatile set up on the 15 Pro.

My household (and my previous phones) includes two 13's and a 13 Mini. As long as you don't take a lot of .5's, you should be fine. If you do take a lot of .5's and feel that's important, you're going to miss that.

Edit: Also can't do portrait photos of anything but people on the 16e - so if you take a lot of portrait shots of inanimate objects, the 16e might not be your best choice

The better software helps offset for the smaller sensor, and the higher megapixels helps with the resolution. The only thing I've had to be more conscious about (due to the lack of sensor-shift) is staying very still when the light gets dimmer. As long as I'm staying more conscious of that, the photos have mostly been better than the 13 line and definitely not worse. Video might suffer a bit compared to the 13 mini because of the lack of sensor-shift, but it's not significantly worse and probably not even noticeable unless they're side by side.

I came from a 13 mini. The ultrawide is missing, but let's be honest - the 13 mini's ultrawide is garbage. It does feel somewhat like a bit of a sidegrade for my use case: I mostly use my phone for texting, email, and calls, with a side of photos of the family and pets. The battery is the shining star, though. It's pretty great. It's snappier opening Signal and the camera app, otherwise it feels and looks the same, screen-wise.

I'd venture to guess this is more of a photographer mod than camera capability. Everything about the 15P's camera setup is better here.
