Your second mock up is, imo, spot on for what it will look like. That's the most logical way to get the screen bigger.
OS wise: I wouldn't know for the life of me how to make a good mock up of this but the ability to fit more on the home screen (or springboard, not sure what it's called), change the black background, add a widget, things like that.
hardware: Also not sure if I'm feeling the chrome border on the black. Not mine, but sort of like this persons mock up

by using the word mock in the search I also tried Verizon I only came up with 155 threads. I sure there will probably be another 100 more of both before June!

Well most iPhone 4.0 wishlists include UI changes or new UI but don't go into specifics. This thread is about those specifics.
This is something I was thinking of today....
Things that we want:
-Bigger/better screen
-Better battery
Limitations with current design:
-Thousands and thousands of apps run at 2:3 so the ratio pretty much needs to stay
-No more room for more battery
So, I thought, widen the phone and lose some of the extra space on the top and bottom (it's not all that pretty in landscape anyway). As you can see this gives room for a bigger and better 2:3 screen. Now that the phone is widened, there is a fair amount of new room. Use it for battery and perhaps even a better speaker and camera. Voilà!

Dethphone. I've had enough of this touchy feely crap. Ensure that it follows the Law of Specific Gravity so that if you drop it, you either impale or break your foot. Power it with a DC/AC converter and step up transformer from the 12v battery to 12000v and a solid iron case so if you drop it in the toilet and reach in for it, you don't get the chance to ask how to dry it out and if Applecare covers it.
