When we were kids, my mother never bought - or encouraged us to ask for - sweets; however, she always ensured that we had fruit, and encouraged us to eat it (she loved it herself), and, if we wanted a snack, it invariably came in the form of fruit. In fact, the house was always - but always - well stocked with fruit.
