As I'm moving out in the next few days I had to reduce my setup to a bare minimum and packed everything in boxes. Somehow I like how simple and minimalistic it looks. But for sure I miss the additional display space I had on both sides with the rotated 20" ACD's. Will figure out how my setup will look in my new home.

Little update... added the X-Touch controller to interface with my X32 rack (bottom right) so now I can use physical sliders and buttons... instead of using a mixing app on my Mac Mini. Now... all I need is the X-Touch and iPad to adjust my mixes.

Also added the fake plant behind the iPad... Stole it from my wife's office...🫣 she wasn't happy...💀

No. But I live in Phoenix, AZ. It's not my computers/displays that dominate my electric bill - it's air conditioning. Particularly in the summer.

I'll caveat all this though by saying that winter bills are usually around $130 for a 1600sq foot two bedroom home. That isn't anything that bothers me, but I imagine WOULD bother a single person used to paying much less than $100 a month in the summer. But there are three other people in the house.

Summer, especially August, is when we get hit the worst. AC bills hit around $450-500 during the summer. But it's PHX. AC is a necessity, much like a furnace is in the east during winter.

How much do those Cinema Displays contribute to your AC bill?

Hmmmm…

Before February 2025 I was running six displays, which included the four Cinemas, the TV and another TV (now in the garage). Adding an additional 3 Cinemas, one of which replaced the other TV and two additional monitors has added, I think, around an additional $30. Can't be quite sure how much, but the bill hasn't overly been affected by the additions.

Current electric bill is $370. Last months's bill was around $278 I think. But we've been running AC since April.

I really do need to get the central AC fixed. Since 2020, when the central AC unit died, we've been using portable and in window AC units. But at $6,500 to $8,000 or so, with one of us having unstable employment since that time, it just hasn't been doable yet.

Man, I've participated in this thread over the years a couple of times, and I can't believe the hardware I had in the past has lasted me this long, and that only recently I have replaced the old mac pro server in the corner that's finally having bootup problems, and the 24" imac that's just so slow it feels like a raccoon died in it, and the freezing 2017 imac .. anyway. I am all apple silicon now, and I can't currently imagine anything else.

M1 mac mini as a quick fix to the maxed out iMac, and it kept up and then some, I was convinced, not long after I got the M2 Pro, and run that as the daily. Then I was convinced 100% that no studio or maxed out system is needed for what I did. BUT .. when they introduced the m4 max and in that pretty black, I had to get it with 64gb ram so I can run all my virtualization and test instances on it without compromise. Yep, M4 Pro mac mini and M4 Max MBP acquired.

My table is filled with network and thunderbolt cables and mac minis, 3d printers and an old imac and a single mouse/ keyboard and monitor to control it all. Crazy.. I hope this is it for a while and I don't find another excuse to buy something newer.. because it's all running great, great .. and did I say it's all running great? Even the M1 ..

This summer it's cable management time, 3d print some vertical stand support and a box to keep the switches in place, etc. Because I can't even use the table properly right now.

But, got the router upgraded to 2,5gbit one, and cables to cat 6e, and a few switches - separated the media from the computer stuff, and the servers on their own vlan, and daily driver on it's isolated vlan, and IoT on a second old router that has no internet, but I can control from 1 machine and 1 phone. And scanners, printers, and 3d printers are on a switch that's only accessible from the MacBook pro.

So, time to get a mini-homelab rack to put the router, bridges, switches, and mac minis in. And retire that imac to the hobby room, and patiently wait for apple to release their new display monitor update. And then do some cable management and move the 3d printer to the hobby room with the imac.

This is a really cool clock screensaver and I may pick it up. I wish it had a little more customization though. The dark with the "glowing" blue digits and hands reminds me of a clock my grandmother had on her dresser. It had flourescent paint on the hands and it had an orange light (dim, incandescent) that illuminated the face.

What kind of customization where you thinking of?

Sorry... I gave a description of my grandmother's clock in my previous post but maybe didn't make it clear. Anyway, something like that. Blue or green fluorescent hands, and maybe numbers. And with a background a that's dim, orangish.

I have no idea how this app works. It seems like there are some colors to choose from, but all have the same brightness?

Anyway, lovely screensaver.

Some of the setups here are absolutely ballin'.
I also can't believe it's been 3 years since I shared my full setup here, time flies. But it still looks the same more or less. What's actually changed is what powers my setup. In 2022, none of the systems I posted in this Mac thread were actual Macs.
Today, they're all gone.
My main system in 2022 was an i5-8400 hackintosh running Catalina (it remained that way until March of 2024). Nowadays, it's an M2 Pro Mac mini. My other systems were old hardware slapped together, that somehow managed to run macOS too. Now they're all Mac minis (and a G5). And I have to say, I like knowing whatever I want to do is simply gonna work. Hackintoshes were fun when I was younger, but I don't have the time to mess with them as much anymore.

But enough of my rambling, here's my June 2025 setup update:

My right-hand setup got a new custom-built desk last year. Unlike what I had before, this new desk fits the space perfectly, and it's also built to support the almost 40kg CRT on top of it. I have to say, I'm proud of it.

The i5-4460 hackintosh has been replaced by this:

IMG_7019.jpg

A Late 2018 Mac mini with the following specs:
  • Processor: Intel Core i7-8700B (6C/12T)
  • Memory: 64GB of DDR4 2666MHz memory (2x32)
  • Storage: 1TB Internal SSD
  • System: macOS Catalina 10.15.7
I didn't get the model with a 10Gbit NIC, as my home network wouldn't be able to take advantage of it. But unlike the old system, which just... existed, the 2018 mini hosts various things, including Immich and my personal website.
The display attached to it has also been upgraded. In my last post, a 23" Cinema HD Display was in its place, which was sadly dying even back then. Now it's a 32" 4K LG 32UN880P that does all the work, and for only 250€, it's a really nice display.

Now onto my main setup:

Again, not much has changed, except the computer attached to it (plus some peripherals, since the old ones have reached their EOL). Here's a photo:

IMG_7021.jpg

Like I said earlier, this setup is connected to an M2 Pro Mac mini, with the following specs:
  • Processor: Apple M2 Pro 10-core (16-core GPU)
  • Memory: 16GB
  • Storage: 500GB Internal SSD
  • System: macOS Sonoma 14.3.1
I like this machine a lot, and when I got it last year, I said I wouldn't replace it for another 6 years at least. But I kinda regret not getting a 32GB config, because 16GB just isn't enough for what I do nowadays. It's not unusual for my swap to hover near the 17GB mark (at least according to iStat), and it's not hard for me to make the Mac feel sluggish.
The displays attached to it haven't changed, it's still two Samsung S24F350s, and one LG 32UN500 (yes, I attached the high end 880P to my server, and kept the low end 500 panel attached to my main system, where I do all my design work).

My audio setup has seen an improvement last year too. The main FL+FR speakers are still the same Jamo E350s, but I've added some more to get a complete 5.1 surround setup (it only supports ProLogic given how old it is, but it's good enough for me. did I say both these setups are in my bedroom?)

I’ve also gotten a bunch more Macs since 2022. Some that I wanted, some that I rescued from being thrown into landfills. That includes (from oldest to newest):
  • PowerMac G3 B&W (G3 400MHz, Rev. 1 board) / 384MB PC100 / ATi Rage 128
  • PowerMac G4 AGP (G4 400MHz 7400, Graphite) / 768MB PC133 / ATi Rage 128 Pro
  • PowerMac G5 PCI-X (Dual 2.3GHz G5 970fx, 2005) / 4GB PC3200 / ATi Radeon 9600
  • MacBook Mid 2006 White (Core Duo T2500 2.0GHz) / 2GB DDR2 667 / Intel GMA 950 (Rescued)
  • iMac 24" Late 2006 (Core 2 Duo T7400 2.16GHz) / 4GB DDR2 667 / Dead GeForce 7300GT (Rescued)
  • Mac mini Mid 2010 (Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz) / 16GB DDR3 1067 / GeForce 320M
  • MacBook Air Early 2015 13" (Core i5 5250U 1.6GHz) / 8GB DDR3 1600 / Intel HD 6000 (Rescued)
  • MacBook Air M2 13" (M2 8-core) / 8GB Memory / 8-core GPU (my old M1 was fine, but mom urgently needed a new laptop 2 years ago, and for some reason, I ended up with a new M2 instead. she got my old M1)
By the way, you might've noticed the black wrap on my white desk in the 2nd photo. It's just that. A leather-textured vinyl wrap, that was supposed to be a replacement for my mousepad. But it's peeling from the edges, and there's already a bunch of scratches and burn marks on it. Does anyone have any suggestions for a large (preferably leather) desk pad? Something I don't have to attach permanently, since I do electronics repair on that desk.

Thank you Richard. So there are two modes, day and night mode, and for each, you can set a color. So you're right about this.

Nice setup.

Wth regards to the desk mat, I have tried several. I liked three Gorilla Grip Brand, Twelve South (which I got on sale for 1/2 off) and something off amazon called Althea Leather Desk Pad Protector.

Of the 3, I probably liked the Gorilla Grip one the best, though it is very close. I still use the 12South because it's the last one I bought & it's slightly larger than the other 2. But the best value was the Aothia one. I got the smaller size 14" x 24" 7 it was only like $10. I actually got 2 of them, brown & black, and both of them still look like brand new. I tried the other brands when I decided I needed something bigger, but these were so cheap that I wouldn't mind doing things like electronics repair on them because they are easy to replace when damaged.
