Hi! Can anyone confirm whether Postscript Type 1 fonts work on Big Sur? Thanks so much!

I downloaded Big Sur 11.1 and have had no problems. BUT, there is an issue with Postscript Type 1 fonts.

As a designer on Macs since early 1990s, I have invested in hundreds of Postscript Type 1 fonts. But now, some work and some don't. In Font Book, I selected all fonts and clicked "Validate fonts", but I get 719 OK but 331 serious errors. They had all been working perfectly previously.

For example, ITC Benguiat Gothic worked but not the italics. So, I removed the font family and tried to re-add the fonts, but then none of them worked! I don't know what to do right now. Adobe CC Fonts and Google Fonts do not have ITC Benguiat Gothic; do I have to buy 8 OTF fonts for £199 from MyFonts?

I have hundreds of InDesign and Quark files with specific fonts; will I have major problems every time I try to open them? HELP!!!

You should be able to use the Type 1 Postscript fonts by putting them in your user account font folder. I have seen cases where the oldest of fonts don't work properly, however. What are the errors that were reported?

Many thanks for your reply. But, I've had all my fonts, except minimum system fonts, in user/library/fonts for many years. So that's not the answer I'm afraid.

Without knowing the error your fonts are giving, I don't think anyone else is going to be able to offer much help.

Instead buy FontXChange and you'll be able to convert your Type 1 fonts into other modern formats. Type 1 fonts are becoming obsolete these days and you shouldn't rely on them.

Check the file size of the problematic fonts.

If any are zero bytes, there are several causes of that:
- copying over a network or disk format that doesn't support Apple's way of storing postscript files.
- zipping using a third party archiver.

Or maybe it's a problem specific to Big Sur.

Even if they fail at validation you should be able to install them, but you should read the error messages and decide what is wrong. Apple have changed some requirements for the fonts, and older features which do not work well in modern environments will be flagged. It is especially older (pre-)unicode features/hacks. Depending on your situation, especially if you are pro you may as well get newer fonts. It will cause problems down the road, not just on Apple platforms.

Apple describes Type 1 PostScript fonts as 'legacy fonts' in this support document. "They might work but aren't recommended."

They've had a good innings. What other software from 1985 kept working for over 30 years without updates?

It's possible that your server's file system, or the connection, doesn't support resource Forks. (If that's the same folder accessed over the network on High Sierra, then it's likely the default connection has changed.)
