It's that time of year again to showcase MacRumors user's choice of "Best of 2021" as drawn from the monthly Photo of the Day threads!

The results are calculated simply. You "voted" when you "reacted" to an image (if you do that sort of thing). All I do is open each month, sort by reaction score, and select the top vote-getters for each month. Each month links you to that POTD thread, sorted by reaction order. If there is a tie in the month, I post all tied entries.

I credit every contributor and link the original posted image (be it MR-hosted or the Flickr link). If your content is displayed and you do NOT want to participate, just let me know and I'll remove your content and move down to the next image. Just know that Darmok does not steal, nor does he make a dime off of your work, but rather he wants to reshare that great shot that you already shared in a year-in-review format! I've done this a few years now, and so far, no one has said "no" to being selected. With that out of the way, I hope you enjoy...

Best of 2020 thread

I know December isn't technically over yet, but we're pretty close and usually the top results don't move too much, though it is a close one! Happy New Year, all, and keep those cameras safely snapping in 2022!

Lastly, feel free to post that "Best of 2021" photo of yours, should you wish. Just remember the usual etiquette of not over-posting.

As for inspiration I am reminded by what my mentor, a respected filmmaker and documentary photographer, tried to teach me. ‘Look and Learn’.

I look at the images shared by a photographer and ask myself questions:
  • Why take that photograph?
  • Why was that viewpoint chosen?
  • Why was that field of view chosen?
  • Why did the photographer choose that composition?
  • Why did the photographer process the image that way?
  • What is the story?
The images also show me parts of this wonderful world that I’ve never seen, and plants, insects and animals I have never had the chance to see.

From all that I gain inspiration and thank all the photographers who share their work for that.

I know there are always concerns about copyrights and theft and the like when sharing content. I know those that make photography their livelihoods have to be extra vigilant when it come to guarding such work. I respect that and know it is important. However, I do this for recreation, for sharing, and to build a skill. Yes, sharing brings risks of theft, which is why I don’t post photos of people. I take tons of photos every year, and I share some of them with friends and family, but friends and family offer very limited feedback. That’s understandable, since they either would try to spare my feelings, take a passing glance in a world teeming with visual content, or simply not know the nuances of what makes one photo stand out from another, or at least how to articulate that. I’ve been doing this for years and even I don’t always know how to articulate it. If you can find a friendly, honest group of photographers to share content with and have a willingness to learn, you can grow that skill, perhaps even as far as you want to take it. MR has been great for me, and like many, I was pretty hesitant to start sharing years ago. Nothing bad happened—quite the opposite! The annual ”Best of” thread is to say thanks, and to encourage others to contribute. One photo a day makes you deliberate and slow down. Follow the rules, learn, enrich lives, and grow! :D

Many thanks Darmok for doing this, it's a real labour of love and much appreciated. They are very special photos. As you might guess, I haven't done much photography for a while!
