Potential hidden malware?

Hey forum goers!

I was trying to settle an issue I've been having and it's starting to worry me now. As of two days ago, with my headphones on, I notice a sort of windows esque chime on my computer in the background. I'm currently running Mac Os sierra, but I was wondering if any of you had experienced this or maybe I have a plug-in or website that makes subtle noises similar to window 7/8 update chimes.

The only other alternative is someone has access to my desktop and is mirroring everything I'm doing on their computer (sounds slightly farfetched, I know) on their computer .

What are some steps I should take to pin point the root of this odd phenomena? Format the hard drive? Or leave everything as is?

If you close everything (use force quit) does it still do it? Or is it only something you hear when certain apps are running like web browser?

If you are worried about malware download malwarebytes (it's free). It's unlikely someone having remote access probably just a bug.

I have something different but similar when using messages. My Mac will play a song from somewhere on the internet (probably YouTube) if I scroll through a certain contact I've been messaging. Very bizarre. It's been there since Mavericks lol.

What's strange is this sound was more prevalent when I had my headphones on (Marshall Monitors). Perhaps you're right about it being an ambient app sound. My fear is that if there is malware/my computer is being accessed remotely, the hacker is able to manipulate when I'm able to hear the sounds...

I don't think it will help your problem but if malware concerns you this is a good app.

More likely is that the sound is a notification from one of your apps (third party, Mail or Messages for example). Or it's coming from one of your browser tabs.

I agree with the poster above. Use Malwarebytes.
