I've been "i" ing off one of those new 17" MBP's but there is one issue that I've come across in the ones I've seen in stores. Well the ones I've played around with won't wake up by just opening the lid, you kinda have to press a key or something. Is this a known issue or what? I didn't see any settings that one could change this and the sales guy at this store said there was a setting that could be changed but I think hee was just dribbling ****. Can anyone verify if this is an issue or what?

from a potential 17 incher here cheers.

i have to press nothing **closes 17" MBP lid

**opens MBP lid
nothing to press, comes right back to this reply

BTW, is this really going to play into your purchase decision? If so, why?

Ditto.

Must be a setting they have.

(PS Apple's got s***-hot deals on the superseded 15" models in Australia at the moment. Starting at $A2399 under Special Deals/Sale on their site)

Not really, I just was thinking something might have changed since the Powerbook days. I will get one nonetheless. I supposed its probably some setting in terminal that particular shop have their MBP's set at. I'm definitely going to get one of these babies, just saving up for the cash (August). Anyone know if the student promotion with that iPod applies to Australian customers as well?

I just can't resist the higher specs on the MBP, I'm willing to wait a little longer for enough dough :)

I'm waiting for August too. But the 17" models at my Apple Store have some of the worst/uneven backlighting I've ever seen! Not good. :(

I am talking about MBPs, not PBs... :)

It'll be $1350 for 2" of screen, FW800, 20GB of HDD, 0.16 MHz of clock speed and a third USB (bizarrely, the old 2.0 GHz is actually $A160 less than the current 2.0GHz, despite having 1GB of RAM, 256MB of VRAM and a 100GB HDD vs 512MB, 128MB, 80GB)...

Hehe your signature just says it all. I could only imagine, our cat just had a litter and these kittens are just so full of energy!

But yeah seems like my finances will work out to be just enough for when the supposed time that Apple may release the Merom for MBP's. Either way, I'm gonna get the MBP (Yonah or Merom). Since buying an Intel iMac for my wife we've been both extremely happy with its performance and is plenty fast enough. I just went into the same apple reseller today just to check out the 17" MBP w/glossy screen of which wasn't as bad as I would have expected reflection-wise but I guess thats another matter all together that I've seen hammered across a few Apple-related forums.

Well I m thinknig of upgrading to Merom MBP this august. Does any one know in case the Merom ones are actually launched in August, Will the Free Nano rebate be available with it? I know no one can be sure until it`s annonced. But what is your guess? Coz that 170$ rebate plus students discount will really make the MBP come under my budget. Anythoghts anyone?

I'm glad you like it. :)

Isn't it nice to have performance again? I loved my PB, but it was never "new computer fast." How did you like the glossy?

I think you'll be safe. Unless Merom is delayed for a September or October release.

I actually liked the glossy very much, its very unlike the glossy screens you see on Toshibas and Sony in that it wasn't as reflective as those yet had that nice high contrast inherent in the "glossy".

On the other hand, since I'm a student graphic designer I was advised against getting a glossy because of the deeper colours which would not be an accurate representation but isn't that what Display profiles and calibration? It was good that apple gave the option for glossy/matte on MBP though because its totally a subjective matter. Personally, I like Apple's implementation of the glossy screen alot.
