Hi.

I am interested in the possibility of switching to mac but wondered if I could find OSX replacements for a couple utilities I presently use (I am aware I can use bootcamp but if I could totally ditch XP it would be a bonus).

The utilities are DVD Shrink + DVD Decrypter.

I backup many DVD's and this would be highly desirable. DVD shrink allows re-authoring of DVD's (removal of audio tracks, subtitles, menus etc) and DVD Decrypter bypasses copy protection placed on popular DVDs.

Incidentally, does anyone know of any PC software where no applicable OSX replacement exists?

Hello. I'm a recent switcher too and I haven't had any problems finding replacement software for anything so far.

For my DVD 'backup' needs, I've used MacTheRipper and DVD2One. MTR will give you the ability to copy the DVD to your Drive(as well as remove the extras) and DVD2One allows you to compress it. I've only backed up a couple movies so far with no issues.

As many people on this forum will tell you, you won't regret it. OSX is much better than windows in so many ways. But it is nice to have the Boot Camp option just in case...

Cheers for the info. I must admit that everyone I have spoken to says they don't regret changing. It is just quite a lot of money to be spending and I don't want to rush into anything!

Do you have the link for DVD2One? I couldn't find a good one.

Also, what version of MTR are you using? I've got 2.6.6, that was the latest I could find.

PM me if you want.

mac the ripper + popcorn (cheap at amazon) work great for me.
i will say that on my mac the whole process does seem about 20% longer than on my previous pc with dvdshrink or dvddecrypter+nero.
