I have a G3 iMac and love it also have a x86 Linux box thats used as my 'daily driver' and am quite pleased with it also - would like to replace my 6 year old G3 with the latest-n-greatest 20 inch iMac but I can't bring myself to part with the $$$ thus I need moral support !

I switched from a G3 to a G5 about two years ago, and I saw an amazing difference, and the new Intel Macintosh systems are screaming fast (even when compared to my G5.) I'm not sure what OS you used on your G3, but I was using Panther (OS X 10.3) and I love the new features of Tiger (OS X 10.4) that came with it. Plus, Leopard (OS X 10.5) is coming out this spring, so it will be a great time to upgrade. And, you'll love the other new features like Front Row and Photo Booth (entertainment that will last you a long time.)
Really, these intels are so fast. I think you'll really love the new features of Mac OS X. My iMac G5 was one of the best purchases I've ever made!
(Oh, and if you're in college or if one of your family members are, you can get an education discount which saves you at least $100 on the 20" iMac!)

If price is an issue wait until the Mac Mini gets its next speed bump and then get one of those bad boys. Since you already have a Linux box you will have all the keyboard and display and everything so it will be an effective way of getting a cheap Mac. Plus, Im guessing from the fact you use Linux that you arent a gamer or a video editing or something that requires massive computing power so the next speed bumped Mac Mini should meet your needs fine.

If you love your G3 iMac you will be very happy with the new model. Since your old machine has a 15" screen, a 12 GB HD and a full 8 MB of VRAM you can save some money by buying the 17" iMac. It has more of everything. Best wishes.
I was thinking about waiting but others on this forum advised me that it wouldn't make any difference other than it coming pre-installed on the imac if i bought later.
If i buy ow and upgrade later it won't cost that much anyway. Plus aren't we taking about June time before Leopard being released.
Plus they are not realing any new imac's i've heard anyway for a while. My 20'' Imac is going to be pimped with 2GB RAM as well as 256mb GPU so i am assuming that even if i buy Leopard later on when it's relased the imac will more than cope with it?

Am i making a big mistake by buying it today then? My PC has done my head in and is going and i need a new computer. I heard that new design Imac's may not come until the end of the year, so that's why i am buying now.

Most people on this site will tell you "If you need it now, then buy it now. If you can wait for the upgrades, then wait." I agree with this.
I wouldn't expect the Santa Rosa chips to be coming into the iMacs until this summer, so I would buy now. But if you can wait another 4-6 weeks for Leopard, I would.

I wouldn't wait...and didn't wait...just got a 24" iMac a week ago!
As far as Leopard is concerned it would be nice to have the computer shipped with it so that you avoid doing the install....but it's not like it is that labor intensive...or troublesome...I have never had a single problem or wrinkle arise when I've upgraded an Apple OS...it's not like upgrading Windows. And if it is $129 as they usually are ...it isn't that expensive to do. You will also have the luxury of waiting a little bit for them to iron out the wrinkles.
As for hardware...it could be this summer...but it could also be next spring...there is absolutely nothing wrong with the performance of the iMac as it is currently shipping. I think we might be a lot further away from a hardware upgrade than you might think.
