Found the following on Apple's site:
In the box
iPad
Dock Connector to USB Cable
10W USB Power Adapter
Documentation

So, wondering why the usb power adapter is also listed as an accessory for $29.99

Maybe for the same reason that you can buy the MagSafe for MacBooks are available online, so you can buy another one if you need to.

It is an available option. I went to make sure it was included after seeing it was for sale.

So you can buy more of them. I have two adapters for my MacBook, one at home, the other at work. It's more convenient that way.

The one available separately has a 6-foot extension cable too. I wonder if it's the same as the one that comes with the laptops - that'd be good.

I think the accessory kit is something you might use if you want to plug it in like at a desk or something. It has a grounded extension cord to go into a power strip. So, keep it at home or the office.

The shipping USB cable and adapter looks just like the iPhone/iPod setup.

Because it includes the extension cord, which is apparently not included in the box with the iPad.......

Oh, okay . . . thanks!
I called Apple and the rep said they were probably there in case someone wants to buy another one. He also said it is the same one included with the iPad. Guess he didn't know what he was talking about

Yep, I agree. I have more than one for my iPhone.
