Hello,

I have a strange issue when my MacBook goes to sleep. My devices that are connected to my hub will "power cycle" continually. What I mean is that the devices act like they are being powered on for about 15 seconds then powered off. I only noticed it because when my DAC turns on initially there will be a static pop through my speakers. I worry that my system doesn't actually sleep.

My configuration:

Big Sur 11.1
2019 MBP i9 and 5500M
HP Thunderbolt Dock 230W
All devices connected to dock: mouse, keyboard, 2x monitors via DP-thunderbolt cables, webcam, DAC, ethernet

Has anyone run into a similar issue to this? Is there a way I can check logs or something to see what's happening when it's supposed to be sleeping?

I appreciate any insights. Thanks for reading.

i have an akai controller (for logic) that wakes up regularly, briefly. it's annoying. so i got a hub with powered slots, and i keep that input off until i need it. still, if this thread turns up any fixes... am interested. meanwhile:

Perhaps this is related to a sleep-related issue I have with my 15 inch rMBP mid-2012 (unsupported) running Big Sur 11.1 (20C69). On Safari, start a YouTube video, then close lid. The sound momentarily stops, but after about 3 seconds, you hear the video play again. Changing settings in Preferences-->Battery-->Power Adapter (or Battery) don't seem to have any effect.

seems to be something different. what happens here (&, apparently for the OP, is)... the mac sleeps. some time later, there is a power cycle, and it wakes our device(s). later, same thing. either way, these things are frustrating...

I did a little experimenting. Turned off "Wake for Network access" under Battery --> Power Adapter. Then I put laptop to sleep successfully. Laptop slept and devices stayed powered off. Successfully woke from sleep.

After that, tried to sleep again. Laptop went to sleep and then was stuck in loop with powering on then off external devices. When I tried to wake, laptop crashed. See this link for log if interested: https://pastebin.com/vB0UaEgi

This whole thing is weird. I don't feel like I have some off the wall random use case. I just have a dock and two monitors. Honestly kind of embarrassing that the laptop can't sleep properly without cycling USB or crashing.

Some more experimenting. I reverted back the setting mentioned in the above post. If I connect my dock with both monitors and all my devices and then reboot, everything works properly. No screen flickering or anything (an issue I've been living with where occasionally one of the two monitors will have this flicker up near the system tray occasionally). After this reboot, I'm able to sleep the system successfully (computer powers down, devices turn off). I'm able to wake the system successfully and both monitors will be detected.

After that 1 sleep, any subsequent sleeps result in the devices on-off looping and one of my external displays not being detected when I wake the system up, requiring an unplug and replug.

Because it will work properly the one time after a reboot I think this is a software deal and not hardware. I'm just not sure what else I can do. My preference would be to be able to sleep the computer at the end of the day but looks like I might just have to shutdown.

I did and appreciate it. I'll either have to sleep and then disconnect dock (which has charger) or just shutdown. Both aren't ideal but I think that's what I'm stuck with.
