Power during the flight

When I flew here to the States, I was on a big plane having "| |" shaped outlet behind each seat, and I used them for my previous laptop (ThinkPad), so my question is that can I use the AC adapter that comes with the MacBook Pro on such outlet?

I am asking it because Apple also provide some flight-specific adapter and I am not very sure about the difference between the two..

The Apple Mag-safe (or whatever it's called) adapter should do the trick. You could still pick up one of the 3rd party airline adapter kits just to make sure you have all the right fittings. Unfortunately, many flights these days only have power outlets for those passengers sitting in either business or first class. One day perhaps I won't be flying coach anymore...

if you're lucky enough to fly business or first, pick up an empower adapter. you can buy one at almost any apple store, or the apple website. i believe magsafe just refers to the fact that it connects to your laptop magnetically, so what you really want is the "empower" magsafe adapter. most US airlines do not include this in coach on even international flights.

then again, i havent bought one because most of my flights are domestic and tend to be shorter than 4 hours, and ive found that if i turn off airport, bluetooth, and turn down the lcd's brightness, i can squeeze out something close to 3.5 hours. that is unless you plan on watching dvds the whole time

If you encode a DVD to an avi, mpg etc you can eeke out more battery life since you'll be using RAM and HDD resources instead of the optical drive. None of this may matter soon with these LED displays in the works .

Oh the woes of flying in the US. Air Canada is replacing/updating the interiors on ALL of its aircraft and are getting 110 household plugs installed at EVERY seat! no more Empower for me!

I bought the Apple magsafe airline adaptor, and it works great (pricey though). Pity i don't fly in business all the time....
