I'm trying to decide which machine I want to get. I currently have a 1.25 g4 powerbook. I do a lot of Photoshop, Illustrator and Dreamweaver work. I primarily run my powerbook as a desktop... and I work it... the fans kick in all the time and the thing get HOT! I've used it for the past two year without any major problems. I've been told I'd be better off with the mid range g5 tower, but I'm not too sure if I want to drop the cash on a machine that is already old tech, considering the mac pro should be coming out sometime soon. But I don't know if I want to snap up a MBP or a future Mac Pro because it can't run the programs I want natively.

any suggestions?

PM G5 will run Adobe native, MBP won't for at least another 6 months +

If you make a living off these machines, I think the answer is simple. ;)

I was in the EXACT situation a few weeks ago. I got a used dual 2.0 PM to use for the next year and then I will probably grab a MBP next year when more of the problems have been worked out. I would suggest the same for you.

Everyone seems convinced that the PPC is dead in the next year or two. That is simply not so. Apple is not going to abandon its current user base anytime soon. PPC software will be around for years and years and years .... period! The Intel laptops are just too messed up right to take the gamble if you make a living off your computer.

Also, if you thought you powerbook got hot.. the MBP get MUCH hotter. Some people's macbook pros are actually melting the magsafe adapter

I would get a Power Mac G5, it is still faster then a Mac Book Pro and will run Adobe and Macromedia (adobe now) software a lot better then the MBP. Until Adobe releases the new versions, I wouldn't switch over because photoshop on my MBP crashes and isn’t the best compared to my PowerMac.

Chrispy is right about the MBP and the heat factor, I was using Aperture on my MBP and the computer got so hot it felt like it was going to burn my legs off...

thanks

Thanks to all for the replies! I think I'll go with the G5, althought I'm very tempted by the "new and the latest". But if its having some problems, you're all right, this is part of my bread and butter. No use messing around. Now I have to decide if I want to use my PBG4 as a trade in or keep it for when I travel or meet clients away from my studio.

Definately keep your PowerBook. Get dual-core 2GHz PM, load it with RAM and get a nice monitor (preferrable Apple Cinema Display) if you dont have one already.

Good choice- I think that a Power Mac G5 is the best solution for you at the moment sAy2k. :)

Oh, and I would hang onto your PowerBook G4- you never know when you will need a portable Mac to take along with you. :)

I'm already loving my 20" cinema display. I was using my laptop in an office job for 4 months, and I hooked it up to the montior they had hooked up to the windows machine they tried to get me to use. I fell in love with the idea of screen space :p

So I think it's decided: New tower, keep the PB and bask in the glory and fast computing :D

Thanks again all!

Glad to hear that you made up your mind sAy2k- enjoy your new Power Mac G5 when you get it. :)

Enjoy.....no use toying around with hardware that won't give you the best performance at the momnet. You'll do just great with a G5 for years to come
