You can perform an Archive & Install. Just insert the install disks that came with your computer and hold "C" during startup. Then select "Archive & Install" from the list (after this, make sure you check the box to save your preferences and settings).

i'm guessing that this will erase all my music and photos on my hard drive? :(

no, an archive and install will make a folder that has the contents of the old install of OS X in it.

All your stuff will be there, there will just be a new folder called "previous system", IIRC.

It's installing the OS again, but your stuff stays put. It's a nifty little feature :)
