I believe that the power supply is rated for 1400 watts.
I assume that this is for when it is maxed out with graphics cards.
I have the base model with upgraded RAM and SSD.
I need to purchase battery UPS and they are Very expensive for 1400 watt.
Can I get by with less?
How much?

I think it all depends on your use case. While web browsing my MacPro 7.1 only draws about 230 watts (computer only, no screen or extermal devices which I have on a separate UPS). But if you want the UPS to continue to power the MacPro 7.1 when a power failure occurs during rendering even the 1400 may not be enough to provide a usable time.

Some of the better units allow you to cascade up to eight external battery packs for longer runtime.

But the point is good - a UPS that barely supports the current draw of the system will have a much shorter runtime than a larger unit.

My use case is that our typical power outages are a few seconds, or a minute or two for a longer one. I look for five minutes at moderate load. Computers and software these days are really good about not losing data on a power failure.

Another UPS benefit is that it's common for a utility outage to be very nasty - storm whipped wires may briefly short several times before tripping the breaker, so the voltage can spike up and down. With a UPS, it will block those spikes and dips. If the power doesn't come back, the systems see a smooth shutoff when the battery is dead. (Or a clean shutdown if you've configured the power agents.)

My 7,1 NcMP is up and running, base 580X for now. Soon to be an Aorus 5700XT. I have a few things besides my Mac plugged into my UPS, but it appears that the new Mac is consuming about 40 Watts less at rest than my old 5,1. The old machine had an RX580.

Could you please list the power consumption in Watts you get with normal and CPU intensive usage?
