I have a powermac g5 dual 2ghz with latest 10.4.1 and security updates. It was working fine till this morning.

There is no Disc in the optical drive but when i hit the eject key on the keyboard i see the graphic but nothing happens. I have repaired permission and rebooted twice and the problem still occurs. Even under the other user name the machine will not open the optical drive up.

Any ideas?

Actually, here are some suggestions:

do you have Toast? If so, open it up, create some sort of CD and hit record. A window will come up with the option to open the tray.

Does Disc Utility do the same thing?

There should also be a tiny pinhole on the front of the drive. That's to manually open it if all else fails. All you need to do is stick something small enough in there and it will open.

yeah i did that. but it seems to be mechanical. i pushed a paperclip in there and got the drive to move out a little and then i pulled the drive out. it didn't come out on its own. it was also smooth when i pulled it out so i didn't force it. it also would not retract on its own. it seemed as if it had no power when it was not working. eject keys and f12 didn't work either.

we rebooted it a few times and it didn't work and now its working now which is odd.
