PowerMac G5 won't restart or shutdown.

My PowerMac G5 has stopped Restarting and Shutting Down. When I click the blue Apple icon, and choose either restart or shutdown - nothing happens. I've force restarted a few times, repaired the disk and repaired permissions. The only way I can restart/shutdown is via terminal: "sudo shutdown -r now".

The only thing I've done recently is to install MS Office 2004 SP2 and the Apple security update/iPod update.


Anyone know whats going on?

I don't know if it's a glitch of some kind or not...but I had my iMac do that. Twice.

....So I decided to be patient......and hit the restart command from the Apple menu again..........and wait......................and wait..............Finally the dialog box came up and I clicked on restart.

This happened on two of my machines, but only happened twice on one and once on the other. My guess is that there must have been some processing going on after the updates, I don't know, but it's never happened again. The shutdown and restart functions are normal now.

After things got back to "Normal", I repaired permissions and noticed that my drive was no longer journaled.

So, after repairing permissions I enabled journaling (after clicking on the "Enable Journaling" icon in Disk Utility) and restarted.

That's been my experience, your results may vary.

Is it just the fact that the dialog box doesn't appear?

Try clicking on the blue Apple while holding the < OPTION > key. (notice the 3 dots behind "Sleep", "Restart" or Shutdown" disappear when pressing this key, resulting in skipping the dialog box)

I would say repair permisions but I dont know....

I've tried waiting, nothing happens. Even using the option key - the OS still does nothing. I'm trying my very best not to reinstall Mac OS X, perhaps the 10.4.3 update will fix things.

I just hope it's not a problem with my PowerMac hardware.

Updating to solve an existing problem will guarantee that it will get worse


Is there something else you may have done and are not telling us?

A reinstall of Mac OS X Tiger solved this. I wonder what brought it about in the first place?

Run "Software Update" from the Apple Menu and make sure you're current. Remember to repair permissions after each "batch" of updates. They're done in sequence, one "batch" has to be done before the others. Most people skip this step but take the time to do it. You won't regret it.

I also found that the 10.4.2 update damages one of the files in the directory, I can't remember now which one it is. This happened to 5 machines, from a G3 to G5, indicating to me that there is an issue with the 10.4.2 update. Running "fsck -f" didn't pick the problem up, however, DiskWarrior did. After running DiskWarrior, all the annoying "hangs" disappeared. The remaining issue for some reason, was the file system was no longer journaled, an easy fix through Disk Utility once all the problems were resolved. After that...smoooooth running, no problems.
