Hey,

I just switched to my first mac a couple weeks ago. Everything was working fine until tonight. I was just using firefox, listening to itunes, nothing too intensive (especially for a powermac) when all of a sudden everything just crashes hard. The dock froze up, i tried to force quit all my applications but that didnt fix anything. Then my screen went black and the fans started spinning up so loud i thought it was going to explode.

Its back up now, but does anyone have any advice on what i did wrong, or how to safely get out of a situation like that if it happens again??

BTW im running 10.4.3 as of two days ago.

thats the first thing I did...

I can honestly say that with Windows I almost never experienced a major crash, but ive only had this mac for a few weeks and already a big scare. It makes me nervous.

Did you add more RAM?

I don't think your powermac will explode. It's going to be ok.....

I don't think you have anything to worry about unless it starts happening often, or it happens again within a few days. Sometimes computers will just lock up without explanation...

I should have added a ":p" as I was kidding about the exploding comment. :p Sorry bout that.

Hmm, but you ordered it with 1GB RAM....

Usually bad/unseated RAM results in a kernel panic, not a freeze, but it could be. I'd say if it continuously happens, either take the RAM out and see if that makes a difference or call Applecare.

Who knows though, it could have just been a total fluke and might never happen again...at least here's to hoping that was all it was. :)

Hey, great purchase.

However, (I'm guessing it's just, unfortuately, side-effects of the Intel switch with personnel moving and such) the Dock has been having problems with 10.4.3. It's possibly a corrupted Software Update file. You might want to try re-downloading it from http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/ or more directly: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosxupdate1043combo.html

If that doesn't work, try repairing permissions in Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility.

After that, people will suggest an Archive and Install restore from your restore discs.

ingenious.
