dual 1.8 g5, 2.25 gig RAM, OS 10.4.2. Ran onyx (repair permissions, empty cache, maintenance scripts etc.), and my powermac still won't shut down. Sleeps just fine. basically the dock and menu bar roll back as usual, and then nothing happens. the mouse pointer still moves, but I have to hold the power button to shut it off.

tiger bug? BTW, this computer is brand new,

When you say it doesn't shut down... does that mean you choose "Shut Down" from the menu and then it takes it a while? Might be good to leave it wait, and also check the hard drive.

Start up off of Installer CD. Go to Disk Utility. Choose Verify Disk. If you need to, Repair Disk. (Not Permissions, these are on the right side, usually grayed out when started off of the hard drive)

That's been happening to me intermittedly, with both sleep and shut down procedures. Sometimes it's a 2 minute lag, other times it just never shuts down. Once in a while it will get to where the dock, finder bar, mouse, and all apps dissappear, and that spinning cog will appear over the desktop, but just get stuck there. Honestly I have no idea what it is, how to resolve it or anything, and have kind of just learned to accept it.

Do you have any PCI cards installed per chance?

hmm
I had a "worse"(maybe.) prob last night.. I pressed the button on my monitor to put it to sleep, accidently woke it with the mouse. Then I pressed it and walked out of the room. I came back in 20 mins and the mouse cursor was gone, the screen was still showing and the fans were skitzing full ball... I had to hold down the power button.. I ran techtool pro today and nothing is damaged though :)

I usually give it a good wait...it just doesn't seem to shut down at all.

Probably just a tiger bug with the g5's...both hard drives (80 and 250 gig seagate 8 MB cache) are brand new so hopefully not an HD problem.

nope. nuffing.

Do you have any unknown apps running in the background. Sometimes you may get an app that is stubborn and won't shut down and therefore, your Mac will not shut down. Check Activity Monitor and see if there are any weird things running in the background. Or try force quitting things like iTunes Helper, etc in Activity Monitor and then shutting down. Keep trying and you might find the problem. I know thats a PITA answer, but it may be the solution. Not all problems are easy fixes unfortunately.
