Powernap- email dloading

Do I need to keep the Mail app open and/or running in background for it to work? I did all the updates and my MBPR says in power save that it'll check for messages in powernap, but nothing gets downloaded.

I left my mac in sleep mode, came back 3 hours later and checked email. All my emails came in. Nothing was downloaded while it was sleeping.

It appears you have to have the app running. It appears the same with regards to Notification working. If the app isn't running, neither will do their full job. Not sure why that is on either, of course I can't even get my notifications to show e-mail so I'm lost on that one.
