AH! I'm pissed off at game developers and such b/c with the release of the intel processors in Apple computers they've all gotten lazy and don't want to take the time to convert the games for PowerPC's.... I have recently purchased a dual 2.5 Ghz PowerMac which is perfectly capable of running most new games but no one's releasing games for ppc....

Just rambling...

But x86 processors are the ones of the future so whatever I guess...

I will just go back to playing COD2, Halo, and such...

P.S. Feel free to ramble too!

x86 has been around for a while, x64 you mean ;)

I didn't realise CoD2 and Halo were ported over to PPC, that's pretty cool. What they seem to be doing now instead is wrapping the Windows game in a Cider/Transgaming layer, and rewriting a few bits here and there. Whilst I'm actually pretty pissed off because of this because I recently bought CoD4 and it's stuck on an old version of the game until the company who did the port, Aspyr, bother to update it themselves, technically it makes releasing the games quite a lot more simple and therefore quicker. Though arguably, what's the point in a fast conversion if it's not going to work properly when it's finally available :/

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but Aspyr do not use Cider. They are a porting house and 'port' the game natively to OS X i.e. not in a wine wrapper. That is why it takes them longer than usual to port an AAA game.

hmm, that would possibly explain why they've not released 1.7 yet :/ The performance of CoD4 seems really inconsistent however, so if it's not a cider or similar translation layer then I'm a little confused about the randomness of the performance.

Once Apple had announced the PPC >> Intel switch, I was worried about this.

TBO, I was even more pessimistic: I was afraid that the use of Boot Camp would be so widespread that game-developers might even be forced to spend less time coding (or transcoding...) for Mac OS X because most "Mac"-gamers simply would boot into Windows to game.

Luckily games, like COD4, are still being released for Mac OS X, but.. as usual... late, and far worse performing than their Windows counter-part.

I just wish gaming in Mac OS X (x86, x64 or PPC) was just as good as in Windows. But the truth is that Windows has far better 3D performance (better drivers from nVidia and ATi for gaming), widespread use of Direct X (like it or not... games do look good and perform very well), and the use of 5.1 Surround Sound.

Of course.. if I can play a cool game like Doom 3, Quake 4 or COD in Mac OS X on my Mac Pro I prefer to do so. No rebooting, and I like to support Mac-gaming developers by buying their products. But.... the newest games (COD 4 etc.) simply can't cut it compared to the Windows version on the same hardware. :(

I'd rather play in OS X because constant rebooting is a real pita and I don't want to deal with Windows, but the performance of OS X versions leaves much to be desired. On older games its not a issue, not on newer, such as COD4 or UT3 it is.

Untl I get a "real" Intel-Mac (the one with a graphics card) I will play mostly in OS X.
