I currently have a 1.42ghz mini I'd like to use as a HTPC Client, I already have an apple TV but alot of my stuff is avi encoded for my Cowon players that I'd like to play on the TV. I figure this gen mini should play xvid's, divx's and vob files without too much of a problem. Can anyone suggest a ppc front end for setting up on the mini, I've tried Centerstage but don't like it alot, obviously Plex is out, I suppose I could just share out the drives and use VLC but I was looking for something with a bit more panache, but I know I'm limited....anyone have any suggestions?

If you install leopard you can use front row. You just need a remote control. There is software that lets you emulate the apple remote with other third party remotes. It would be great though if apple released a remote for front row like they have for iTunes.

I Don't know how well Leopard would run on this mini, if anyone has any comments... does the PPC mini have an IR for a remote ? My mini does not have blutooth. And finally is Front row part of Leopard?

You don't need Leopard to run Front Row, it's also included in Tiger (cmd+esc). I actually prefer the version in Tiger for a few tasks like listening to music because it's just a front end for the actual apps (itunes, iphoto, quicktime, etc..) and lets the music keep playing when escaping out of Front Row which is my biggest gripe with the new version.

Leopard runs fine on mine with 1GB ram. There's no IR port but if you want to run any sort of HTPC (HTMAC?) you'll need to buy a remote anyway, they usually come with a USB IR box.

You don't need blue tooth for a remote. The iPhone remote uses Wi-Fi.

Front row comes with both Leopard and newer intel versions of Tiger, however on your machine you don't have access to the tiger version without hacking. You can try it if you want. (Don't ask how, just google it)

It isn't enabled on the Mini though. You have to crack it and hope the god it works. I didn't get it working. The OP might get lucky and get it working, but it's plain wrong to say it just works.

Did the G4 mini have IR?

Nope.
