I installed Catalina open beta today, and I'm really happy with it so far, but I do have a problem with PPTP VPN to my work.

Are there any client yet that actually works with Catalina and doesn't cost an arm and a leg? I have Shimo, but it does not work so far.

PPTP was dropped in macOS Sierra. Get your IT team to move to a more secure method for VPN, nobody should be using that!

As for clients, why not use IKEV2 or IPSEC built into macOS? If SSL VPN use Tunnelblic if you want a free client app?

Sorry, but changing protocol is not gonna happen anytime soon, so I really need some advice.

I reached out to Shimo, and they will add support for Catalina, but no estimate in time.

Spoke to my IT-technician today, and it turns out our company firewall is very old and does not support many modern protocols. We agreed that we will replace it with a new one that supports L2TP/IPsec and so I guess this issue is not really an issue any more. Until the firewall's been switched, I'm using PPTP through Bootcamp that'll hold me for now.

So we installed the new FW today, and VPN via L2TP/IPsec (with preshared key) works perfekt with all Windows clients and Shimo, but native in MacOS I cannot get it to work.

Are there any guides on what I'm doing wrong?

EDIT: Fixed. Working fine now. :)

Hi Muyfa
I'm pretty envious that you were able to fix Shimo on Catalina... Any chance you could post me (and others) a short primer here?
Thanks!

EDIT: Fixed it :) To others - it was a racoon deamon that suddenly was gone. Reinstalling Shimo helper tools did the trick. This can be done via Preferences -> Advanced.

Good for you that you solved it. I actually don't use Shimo at all anymore as we changed to L2TP VPN at work, so I use the built-in VPN of MacOS instead (works flawless in Catalina).

Hi All,

Can you help please?

I originally had macOS High Sierra with macOS server app which had the built in VPN L2TP protocol and worked fine. I then upgraded to macOS Mojave but the VPN service and others were stripped out and was unable to get the VPN service to work. However, I got the VPN L2TP protocol working by following this guide https://developer.apple.com/support/downloads/macOS-Server-Service-Migration-Guide.pdf

I have now upgraded to macOS Catalina and my VPN L2TP is no longer working.

Is it something to do with racoon / vpnd service that needs to be replaced on the Mac?

Appreciate any help on this please. As a backup I’m running Ubuntu on VMware fusion which accepts VPN connections and clients can successfully connect to it.

Many thanks

My VPN server which worked in 10.14.6 also stopped working with the Catalina upgrade.
While I have not used it, I see that the author of VPN Enabler, which uses the built in Apple VPN server, has also been unable to make his app work in Catalina so far. http://cutedgesystems.com/weblog/index.php?entry=/Technology/macOSCat.txt

What version of Shimo are you using? I am on Shimo 5 and get a dialog box stating that it's not supported (and then the VPN profile gets disabled)

I use Viscosity for several of my VPN connections. I don't do PPTP but they note it is an option.

Again, I'm not using Shimo anymore. I'm using the native VPN functions of Catalina.
