HI all,

My iPad 4 is with me 24/7.
I'm either holding it or it's within arms length.

The apps are starting to exclude the iPad 4 updates.

I'm seriously considering the iPad Pro 3rd Gen 12.9".

Just curious if anyone has any thought on the
Practical Every Day Use of the iPad Pro 12.9" (not transporting nor protecting)

So just thoughts on carrying it around 24/7 and actively using it all the time.

Thanks in advance.

I carry my gen 2 12.9 daily and probably log about 3 hours of screen on time a day or more, 7 days a week doing various tasks. From a practicality standpoint I’m perfectly happy with the form factor and I would not want a smaller device. It is perfect for me for note taking, PDF annotation, web browsing, forum browsing and video consumption. Those are the things I primarily use my iPad Pro for. I make no attempts to do productivity work on it, I use my mobile workstation for that (well spec’d windows 10 laptop workstation).

I’m sure I’m not alone in this, just as I’m sure that the large form factor is not for everyone.

As a back story....When I got my first 12.9”, it felt massive. I laughed at how big it was when I opened the box for the first time on release day. My husband had picked it up from Apple for me and brought it to me at work, so I didn’t see it before I bought it. So while it seemed so big, it was also fantastically big. I loved the new large screen size that I could hold in my hands. I moved to a bigger handbag so I could put it in there for transportation. I now have the 3rd gen 12.9” and it’s smaller in size with the same size screen, but you know all this.

Anyway, I quickly got used to the larger screen and it made my smaller iPad (an Air 2 at the time) feel like a mini.
I found that by still using a smaller iPad as well that the 12.9 felt big when I’d pick it up again, but when I used the 12.9 constantly, without switching back to a smaller iPad, that it began to feel like a normal iPad size. I mean, I know it’s still big, but it felt like the size that an iPad should be. It took me a few weeks for it to feel like my normal size iPad. Coming from an iPad 4 though, I guess you are not going to feel much difference in weight, but you are going to feel the slimness, larger screen and power of the iPad. It’s fantastic.

I take mine out of the house all of the time. I do also have an iPP 10.5 and mini 5, just because I have an iPad addiction and use the smaller ones in various situations. But, if I had to pick one of my iPads and only one, it would be the 12.9. At times I wonder if I should have consolidated and bought just the 11”, but then I use the 12.9” again and think that I probably couldn’t go back down to the smaller size without having the 12.9” still. The 12.9” just now feels like the size it should be now.

I’m waiting on the arrival of my Brydge keyboard and that will be like a dock for it that I mostly leave at home on my desk. I expect to still take it out and about with just the folio cover. I use a handbag or a dedicated iPad sleeve/case for it when taking it places.

Thanks to all.

Is it too heavy/unwieldy to hold with one hand and operate with the other?

How does it feel using it when you're standing up?

Does anyone use the pencil with it?

is it too big to carry from room to room quickly?

Is it fast enough to play 1080p movies without jittering?

I'm also thinking about going without cellular.
And using the money for larger storage.
I can wifi connect to my iPhone hot spot.

etc.

Thanks again

I think most experience points are just personal preference and one can easily make a 13” tablet work - it’s just the upper half of a 13” laptop from a size perspective.

Is it made for single-hand use? Unlikely.
Is it comfortable in one hand? Unlikely.
It sure is fast enough for HD movies, any current iPad easily is.

I never get cellular iPads, always tether to the phone - no problem.

Apple has a two week return policy in most countries - I recommend you get one and test it out for two weeks and return it if you’re not happy.

That would be one heck of an upgrade.

I just got an 11" ipad pro after trying a 12.9" for a few hours. The 12.9 was just too big and heavy for me to carry around my home and office, especially with a keyboard case.

I'm at home 24/7, retired and dialysis. A 2018 iPap Pro 12.9 and 2018 9.7 iPad are for pretty much everything except gaming (Windows laptop and XBox One). I'm always using Goodnotes/Notability for writing down appointments, PDF Expert for manipulating and signing legal documemts and/or purchase receipts.

I use the Calendar and Google Calendar to schedule appointments. Google Docs on the Ipad Pro and Docs/MS Word on the 9.7.

A couple of bluetooth keyboards, etc. Oh ueah, with Amazon Alexa on the iPad am controlling all my lights, plugs, etc.

It's never more than a room away.

Tom

I have had all three generations of iPad Pro and have gone with the smaller one each time. (9.7", 10.5", and now 11") I just really like having the more compact size for when I'm reading or watching a movie or show in bed or traveling with it. Every time I go near an Apple Store I always go in and mess with the 12.9" models just to get a fresh perspective and I still just don't feel like I want the bigger one, even with all the art and photo editing I've been doing lately.

Carry my 12.9 with me daily. Been doing so since 2015 gen 1. Didn’t take me long to get used to it. Love the extra screen space. Stayed with the 12.9 when I bought the latest model.

You have the best of both worlds if you've been a 12.9 person this whole time. Same screen real estate, smaller device. I think a lot of 12.9 users were dying for that.

- No - It feels like I'm using a clip-board and a pen.

How does it feel using it when you're standing up?
- Very Comfortable. If you've walked around and have used a clip-board with a pen, It's very natural.

Does anyone use the pencil with it?
- Yes - I've shifted from using a MacbookPro to the iPad pro with the pencil to take notes in corporate meetings and design sessions.

is it too big to carry from room to room quickly?
- No - Especially because I forgoe the keyboard to keep it light weight.

Is it fast enough to play 1080p movies without jittering?
- Yes - Smooth as ice.

I'm also thinking about going without cellular.
- I don't have cellular, while it's more convenient, if you carry an iPhone and want to save on a monthly fee, there is always a connection near by.

And using the money for larger storage.
- Good idea.
