Practicle Difference between NTFS and HFS+

Hi,

I have been using Paragon NTFS to read NTFS disks and its working great (I am getting transfer rates of over 50MB/s with Firewire 800).

One drawback of using this setup is that deleted files are permanently deleted when dragged into Bin (i.e. they can not be undeleted).

Was wondering if there were any other disadvantages, I realise that according to Mr Jobs this is a crime that should be purchasable by a slow and painful death but would really like to try to keep this discussion objective.

So do the files look the same to the applications, is the same meta data held. Are there any specific technical problems I may encounter, apart from HFS+ is a lot better than NTFS.)?

I believe that both file systems are really well sorted out. Microsoft and Apple have spent considerable effort on development. Also, both have been successfully used in lots of high performance environments so it can only be fair to say they are both quite good.

If there are any specific, technical issues with the implementation of NTFS on Mac OS X using the Paragon method thats out of my area of expertise.

I don't see the point in bringing NTFS support into mac os x.. Let Mac be mac and windows be windows, meaning.. bootcamp for windows and mac os x for mac.

I am against using NTFS under mac os x.

It would be nice of apple to add ntfs support for people who use drives between windows and mac's. Also microshit should get off its ass and start supporting other disk formats beside their own.

So if a client gives me Media on a NTFS disk I should boot into Windows and edit it on Sony Vegas rather than FCP? Telling Clients I only accept Mac media is not going to help my cashflow.

FCP is different, I am talking about disk utility and using Paragon's software with disk utility as the wrong commands can cause problems for the mac os x partition.. FCP is a totally different story as that has a self-contained NTFS support built in which won't cause problems for the partition.

OK, ime all ears. Tell me more. What wrong commands? Is there any evidence of this, my understanding was that Paragon NTFS worked well.

Are you saying if you just read/write to disk in Mac and use windows to do any disk admin/partitioning etc all is OK but if you try to do clever stuff using Mac Disk Utility things go wrong. Not a problem as I would do any disk admin in windows for NTFS disks, doing admin stuff from mac for a windows file-system is a little cavalier.
