Random question, but I'm curiously wondering why it seems many operators around the world are still dragging their feet when it comes to offering eSIM, especially to pre-paid users, or of they do offer any kind of eSIM they make it extremely complicated. For example, you can order a new physical sim for any plan as a new client with Orange in Belgium and they then mail it to you, but in order to get an eSIM you need to go into a physical store with the sim they just mailed you and request an eSIM and they then install it for you. Why don't they just let you install the eSIM yourself, at home, first time around?

I now have my primary number on a pre-paid eSIM with Mobile Vikings in Belgium, very quick and easy to set up sitting on my couch at home in 5 mins flat, AND, you can just as easily re-install it in another device if you replace your old one. Swapped iPhones with wife, just logged into my account on my laptop, scan QR with new phone, done. No phoning customer service as is the case with many other networks.

I travel a lot and am already using Airalo, but local operators are often cheaper so I would prefer to use them as much as possible.

Now despite Africa being a 3rd world continent, Vodacom and MTN in South Africa offer eSIM, but only to contract users at this time, yet the pre-paid sim as we know it today (real time debit of credit using an Intelligent Network Platform) was invented in South Africa because of the shear demand for such.

I paid a premium price for my iPhone, so I would kind of like to use all its time saving convenience features as much as possible, especially eSIM.

This escapes me as well. If anything implementing eSim solutions will save money for every company and it will be easier to activate or deactivate.
