Hi.

I have a 2 year contract for my iPhone 3GS, and have no issues with that whatsoever. I just wanted to have another sim card, such as a pre-paid one so that when when I take a small weekend trip with my fiance.. I don't get disturbed with any calls from work, but at the same time I have full access to my iPhone (music, videos, internet, and calling). Would that be possible? If not, does a pre-paid SIM card exist where I can use the calling but will just live briefly that weekend without the internet access?

Thanks.

In Switzerland, the iPhone is locked to the provider, so another simcard (prepaid or otherwise) from the same provider will work on the same iPhone.

So I think the answer is yes, provided you buy simcard from the same telco.

You will have to jailbreak and unlock if you want to use another carrier like tmobile. I am pretty sure there prepaid plans can cover data you just need to add it. ATT's gophone sim's might still work but some people have been reporting they won't get any data anymore, I guess its something you will have to try before you head out onto your trip.

you can use a prepaid sim card if you've unlocked the iphone ;)

I believe the lock on the iPhone is not number (IMEI or mobilephone simcard) specific. They can only lock a certain range belonging to one provider.

Therefore you may not need to unlock if you buy the prepaid simcard from the same provider of the iPhone.

I'm using a pre-paid sim card in my iPhone 3G and I didn't have to hack it or anything. It actually activated automatically and I've been using it for phone calls and text for a few days now.

Yes, you still get data, but you get charged a LOT of money to use data... so I've added a fake APN to disable data. I just use wifi now when I need the internet on it.

Works out pretty well.

Thanks for your responses guys. What sim card are you using, and how do I disable data (i.e. enter fake APN)? I wouldn't mind just using it for calls and my music. I don't need texting or internet for that weekend.

Go to this website: unlockit.co.nz and choose "disable data" and it will install a profile that basically has an incorrect data address that makes it so the iPhone can't get an internet connection over the cell connection. However, everything else will still work (including wifi).

I've added unlimited text to my go-phone plan by calling 611 and adding a texting feature.

The go-phone sim card I'm using came in a motorola razor, but I'm sure you can pick up any cheap go-phone and activate the sim for it... then put it in your iPhone.

Good luck mate!

Thanks for these details. But once I download that profile.. how do I get rid of it when I get back after that weekend?

Once I am back, I plan to switch my 3GS SIM back in and take out the go-phone SIM.. so that I can use my unlimited data again.
