Predict the price for the 16GB Nexus 5

Improvement over the Nexus 4 that will bring the price up even with the decreasing cost of technology. (2013 Nexus 7 cost $229 compare to $199 for 2012 model....I have a feeling that the Nexus 5 cost will follow the same line).

-2.3Ghz Snapdragon 800 quad-core
-higher resolution screen (1080p), bigger screen
-16GB of storage instead of 8GB
-Bigger battery


All this will mean that it is unlikely to be at $299.

If I have to bet, I would say

$299: 10% likelihood
$329: 35% likelihood
$349: 55% likelihood


Would be nice with $329 for 16GB and $379 for 32GB.

I went to +1 this post and my browser didn't know what to do! It froze up....

I guess my computer has picked up on our bickering so much it wasn't sure what to make of my agreeing with you!

If it turns out to retain this price point and has the things I mentioned above, I'll be ecstatic. Even if I sell my GS4 + cases (and keep the microSD card) for something like $450 (same price I sold my HTC One for), even after eBay and Paypal fees I come out pretty far ahead.

Maybe I'll go for the 32 GB version!

While the $400-500 price point is still more affordable than most unlocked phones with these specs, I'd be shocked if those prices turn out true.

Let's keep in mind that moto didn't subsidize the moto x. They left that for the carriers to do. Google will almost certainly be subsidizing the nexus 5 just like they supposedly did with the nexus 4. They want to get these in as many peoples hands as possible.

Google isn't subsidizing anything. They just sell them at break-even.

It probably cost $220 to make the Nexus 5.

LG sell it to Google at $270. $50 profits for LG for each handset.

Google sell it at $329. This gives Google $59 for each handset to "break-even." Shipment from factory to Google warehouse, Customer service, warehouse expense, warranty, returns, marketing etc...

Google isn't losing money on the Nexus 4. They won't for the Nexus 5.

Ahh, that's too bad. That would be a deal breaker for me. After having the dismal battery life of the ip5, then going to something incredible like the LG G2 I think I would have a hard time with crappy battery life again.

This will definitely be one area of the Nexus 5 to keep an eye out for. 2300 mAh is really not small when you consider the S4 is merely 300 mAh larger, but has a less efficient processor. Hopefully, the Snapdragon 800 along with KitKat 4.4 will make the 2300 mAh acceptable.

The camera is the other thing that I'll be paying close attention to. Hope Google can deliver on their promise of ending the poor history of bad cameras with the Nexus line.

Surely if they wanted to get it in the hands of more people they would 1 have had a proper global launch and 2 release it in more countries than the pitiful amount it's actually available to buy in.

There were many reports last year that google was subsidizing the nexus 4 but neither of us knows for sure.

Why not release it in all European countries if you want it in more people's hands? why not let carriers sell the phone ?

They had their feel with carriers with the GNex on Verizon. I don't believe they will be doing that again. Tmobile is the only carrier that will not put bloatware on it, and will let google do the updating. Google wants the control with the nexus phones, so carriers here in the states are out of the question. Now selling it in all of Europe could work, but I have no idea if there is something stopping them. Or it would cost more money then they want pay. Maybe they did not see the need. Who knows, but it could be in option for this year.

No 2300 is not bad, but it's not phenomenal either. The 3000mah on the G2 is in that phenomenal category IMO. That thing just keeps on going no matter what I throw at it. You get spoiled at that point, not having to worry about even bringing a charging cable with you or having one in the car.

I was hoping to correct some of the flaws the G2 has with the N5 though, and get the battery life.

I personally don't follow the whole thinness fad. It's just something Apple started and everyone else is following. If, for example, the Nexus 4 was thicker to accommodate a 2600 mAh battery, I would be much happier than it being thinner with a smaller battery like it is now.

Manufacturers keep sacrificing battery life for thinness and I hate it.
