The iPhone HD will have a notification system at the top or bottom of the screen, replacing the annoying pop-up system that current models have.

This will only be for the iPhone HD because other models will not be able to support it for hardware reasons, i.e., it would take up too much screen space to have a part of the screen just for notifications, but the new model will have a higher resolution screen.

That does not make too much sense. What hardware component is needed to allow notifications being displayed on the top rather then pop-ups.

Plus wouldn't apple have built in APIs to allow developers to take advantage?

I'm going to have to agree with maflynn here. The rumored hardware change to the iPhone HDs screen is to exactly quadruple the resolution, from 320x480 to 640x960. Apps would therefore be scaled natively, with no "additional" room for notifications that is not present in existing devices. And of course, there'd have to be a way for developers to send notifications there, unless it was just going to hijack existing notifications and move them, which sounds like a hack at best.

Even if the screen is physically the same size (and how trustworthy is this rumor anyway?), a higher resolution means more pixels to be used for a notification display. And it wouldn't be a "hack" to display notifications differently. Nothing would need to change on the server side.

But what hardware component is needed to allow the notifications on the top.

Your original post dictates that there will be a hardware difference that is preventing current iphones from having notifications on the top? That makes no sense.

Rather the current UI design prevents such a measure, and by adding that, it would futher clutter an otherwise clean and useful UI. Take the double-press home button for task switching. Apple didn't want to clutter the UI up, so they pushed it up to show running apps.

I'd love to see a new notification system but something tells me that if it was coming in the summer it would have been included in the iPhone OS 4.0 beta. And it isn't.

The way in which notifications work are definitely one of the few weak parts of iPhone OS.

I suspect there will be a good few new features that are limited to the next iPhone - higher resolution display, perhaps video calls and who knows what else! But as for major OS level features I suspect we have seen the big ones already in the OS 4.0 preview.

It is certainly plausible that we see an improved notification system on ALL supported iPhone OS 4.0 devices. Furthermore, Apple could save such a feature as a "one more thing" type announcement, which does not require a developer preview or beta testing.

That said, when have we ever seen such 'surprise' functionality, in the history of iPhone OS?

Plus wouldn't apple have built in APIs to allow developers to take advantage?

Like LocalNotification, for example?

The iPhone HD is already out and is called the Nexus One. It multitasks, has an HD screen and notification system on its home screen. Come on Apple, give us something better than this lame update that barely keeps up with your competitors

As much as i'd love to see new notification system, I don't see it happening as a separate feature only for the new iPhone.

Not impossible - but seems unlikely to me.

I really hate the popup box notifications we have at the moment. Once you've been notified, it's gone. There is no list of recent notifications.

A revamped notification system will be on iPhone OS 5. Why? Just look at the pattern: (The following statements are just my general observations of peoples reactions to the various apple announcements)

2007: iPhone announced, everyone is amazed, they call it the jesus phone, but as the hype dies people start complaining about the fact that it doesn't have 3G or GPS
2008: iPhone 3G: Yay it's just what everyone wanted, it finally has 3G and GPS, oh and look! Now we have apps... But why doesn't it have copy and paste? or MMS, or a Video camera? every other phone on the market does why is apple not listening to their customers...
2009: OMG copy and paste! Look and now we have MMS and tethering too (For non US), and there is that video camera it needed to be a "modern" phone, plus now we have push notifications that will be just as good as multitasking... Or not, how could Apple not have realized we needed to listen to our streaming radio while surfing the web, who cares about how it will effect battery-life I want my true multitasking!
2010: Multitasking! and Folders! and more awesomeness, but look at this, how could apple have not revamped the notification system, its obvious that its annoying, how could they not see their customers need a streamlined notification system, what are they thinking...

Honestly I get it, some of these things should of been thought of, they probably were, there are probably prototypes of every feature everyone ever wanted in the Apple campus, but Apple can't read our minds, they put their focus and development behind the features that seem to get the most reaction from their customers, and that they believe are the most important, every time they release one we have another thing to complain about. Along these lines, this is why I suspect that the iPhone HD will have a front facing camera (Because thats all people have been talking about since the 3GS, and actually since the 3.0 announcement, kinda like these notifications).

While 640x960 is quadruple the pixels, it is only double the resolution of 320x480 ;)

isn't this basically the same thread as this one?

C'mon you guys... you know it's possible and it can happen.

It's like the battery percentage last year, oh and video recording perhaps?. That was a joke.

Same thing can happen, they can easily implement more software restrictions.
