What is your preferred MacBook Pro screen size?

Do you like the 15", the 17" or would you prefer a different size screen? Personally, I'd prefer a 13.3" MBP and hope they bring back that size for pro models.

Also, any ideas as to why they dropped the smaller pro model?

13" is way to small for me (my friend has one).

For me, 15" is the perfect size if you plan to carry it around a lot. 17" if you change position some what seldom. I'm a video editor too, so 15" is decent. 13 is way to small. 17" is really unnecessary (for me anyway, it's more a minor luxury).

When I had a MacBook, all I could think about was upgrading to a 17" MacBook Pro. Then when I went to the store I thought of the 15" MacBook Pro as the "sweet spot" between the 13" and 17". Thats just my opinion. :)

I'd love a 13.3" pro model - aluminium enclosure, matte screen, thinner frame, (the one around the MacBook screen is quite chunky) a decent graphics card (integrated just doesn't cut it) and a "proper" keyboard.

I've had a 17" Powerbook, and while I loved it at first, I ended up carrying it about places more and more, and the size/weight just got in the way. The new 15" machines have the same resolution as my 17" did (as Apple is moving away from 100 dpi now) so you get the extra portability without losing work space.

Unless you only ever carry it from one desk to another (home/work etc) and need the additional resolution, I'd go with the 15" pro. One thing I would like to see is the addition of a numpad on the 17" model - there's plenty of room for one if they just make the speaker grilles smaller.

The 15'' MBP is the perfect size for general use, in my opinion. I think the 13'' screen is good for portability, but too small for regular use. The 17'' is good for people who don't go far with their notebook, but it is heavy and doesn't fit in many of the nice cases, plus it can be awkward to use in some more cramped spaces. The 15'' is roughly body width, so it is seldom an awkward size.

15"

Though I never owned a Mac laptop with screen more than 12", I've seen my dad's both 15" AlBook, MBP and 17" MBP. While that 17" looks good on a table, I think its pretty big/heavy to carry around. I prefer 15 :)

17" MBPs are sexy.

I had one for a bit. I planned on having a 17" for a replacement desktop and then a 12" Powerbook for everyday stuff. Then I decided I just wanted one computer because transferring files back and forth between the two computers was getting to be a big hassle. I've gone down to a 15", and still have my 12" but it really doesn't get as much use anymore. The 15" is the perfect size.

I think it may have had something to do with the heat output of the Core Duo processor.

Well, the MacBool is only 0.08" thicker, and a 13".

They want to differantiate the Pro from consumer line not only by GPU, DDL, backlit KB, case, FW800, ExpressCard etc. but also screen size;)

BTW, th 12" PB was an aluminum iBook with a GeForce 5200Go.

I would love to see a 13". My 12" powerbook was perfect for me since i carry it everywhere. I guess i can see why apple dropped it though. It is supposed to be a professional grade laptop and not too many professionals find a 12" or 13" convenient to work with for long periods.

i would love one, but there isn't room in the lineup for a MacBook Pro Mini.

If they did it, i reckon they should make the current black MacBook the Pro version (with real GPU, backlit keys, case, FW800 and maybe express slot), make the 2.0GHz white model black, and keep the 1.83GHz model as is.

By the way, i love my 13" MB because of its portability, but 15" really hits the sweet spot for me in terms of screen estate and portability. 17" for me is too big; its a desktop replacement rather than a notebook, and i like notebooks. :)

I don't see why not - they had 12" Powerbooks and iBooks.

I hope not - I'd rather see them just offer one or maybe two MacBook configurations and a Pro machine. They could have a "low end" MacBook in white with the slower processor/combo drive (although it really should have a dvd burner in this day and age) and then a high end in black. (or perhaps make it a free option on them, like the matte/glossy screen on Pros)

The MacBooks just aren't built as well as the pro machines, and the keyboard isn't nearly as nice to type on. Aluminium really makes the pro machines stand out - the black macbook just looks like a generic PC laptop, in my opinion.

I have a 15" MBP and its superb. The 1440x900 screen is excellent, everything is readable and clean/clear/crisp.

My only gripe with it is the speed/size of the hard drive, and, would you believe, its the noisiest thing in the box.

I considered a MB, but my experiences with the GMA950 graphics in my mini put me off that. Which I guess, is a way of saying a 13" MBP with real graphics would probably get my vote - except having just dropped the wad of cash required for a MBP with 2GB RAM, I aint getting nothing else for quite some time.

I'd say that the MBP 15.4" is the best.

15.4" Winxp laptops are way too big i think! I'm selling one now for that very reason. (amongst others). 6.6 lbs..

but the 15.4" MBP... perfect blend of style, function and portability. :D

I disagree, i like the MB keyboard a lot better than other keyboards - it feels sturdier, I think the MBPs keys feel kind of flimsy, without enough spring or something. Just because the keys look differently doesn't mean that it's not "nice to type on". The Macbooks aren't built as well as the pro machines? I'd say mine's pretty sturdy, it's not as GOOD perhaps, but that's why it's a consumer model. Also, have you really looked at generic PC laptops these days? I've yet to see a black one. They're usually all gray or silvered up with textures and stripes going every which way. The black macbook is black and white, not five different colors on the keyboard, the same color scheme everwhere. And while the aluminum does make it stand out, so does the contrast between the glowing white apple and the black casing. The macbooks also don't transmit heat throughout the case like the MBPs do, so the inside surface doesn't get as warm when typing, the white letters on black keys make it stand out in the dark like the illuminated MBP keys, and i love the magnetic latch much more than the button that the MBP has.

13.3" is way too small and impracticle for a desktop replacement... i think if you're gonna use a pro machine you need the screen real estate... i'm sticking to 17" forever

Well I've been using a Macbook for the last month or so after having a Powerbook for a year and a half, and I don't like the keys nearly as much. The gaps between them mean your fingers don't "glide" over as well, and I definitely feel like my typing has been slowed down a bit. They do have a fairly good action to them though, but the spacebar on this has started squeaking now when I type quickly.

The Macbooks aren't built as well as the pro machines? I'd say mine's pretty sturdy, it's not as GOOD perhaps, but that's why it's a consumer model.
It just doesn't feel nearly as well finished, or as sturdy as my Powerbook did - it definitely feels a lot "cheaper" to carry about and use. The glossy plastic certainly doesn't feel as nice to hold either.

I'm not saying it's a bad machine - it's still probably better than most of the cheap PC laptops out there now, but it doesn't feel nearly as good as the pro machines.

Also, have you really looked at generic PC laptops these days? I've yet to see a black one. They're usually all gray or silvered up with textures and stripes going every which way. Ok, so maybe PC laptops don't all look like black boxes these days, but that's what it feels like to me. Shortly after they were released I was browsing the web and saw an ad for a black notebook. My thoughts were "Nice, a MacBook ad already" - I scrolled up and it was some HP machine. You could never make that mistake with the white MacBook or the Pros.

Maybe most new PC laptops are tacky silver plastic things, but most of the laptops I've ever seen have been generic black boxes, and that's what the black MacBook looks like to me.

The MacBooks also don't transmit heat throughout the case like the MBPs do, so the inside surface doesn't get as warm when typing, the white letters on black keys make it stand out in the dark like the illuminated MBP keys, and i love the magnetic latch much more than the button that the MBP has.
They certainly do transfer heat through the case. The upper-left corner especially gets quite hot at times. Perhaps not as much as the Pros/Powerbooks, but it's far from insulating the machine.

I'm a touch-typer anyway, so I don't really look at the keys, so that's a bit of a moot point. (and you just can't compare painted on white text to backlighting)

I agree that the magnetic latch is very nice, but it often ends up slamming shut here, as I keep forgetting that it's going to do that, which can't be good for the screen/camera.

13.3" is way too small and impracticle for a desktop replacement... i think if you're gonna use a pro machine you need the screen real estate... i'm sticking to 17" forever
I don't see why being a pro machine means it has to be huge? For me, I would want as portable a laptop as possible with a decent CPU and a good graphics card so that I could hook it up to an external display if I need the extra real-estate. I don't know what you use your 17" machine for, but laptop screens just aren't high enough quality to do any real image editing on, so I'd be hooked up to an external display anyway.

I think that 17" is waay too big for a laptop. Too wide, so big to have on your lap.

My 15.4" screen is perfect I think. I could actually probably stand a smaller screen if it were an option for the MBP.

that's what external monitors are for, i need screen real estate - when I'm at home doing serious stuff - on the road i need portability

just bought a 15" C2D
would have prefered a 13,12,11 or even 10" MBP ... as long as it still drives a 30" external !
