I've read that Apple will be allowing people to stay on iOS 14 for the next year. Anyone going to take that option for older hardware?

Such as, potentially for me, leaving my iPhone 7+ on 14, along with my Mini 4 (which in first extended usage in some time the last week, was showing its age). But upgrading my 12 Pro and 2018 iPad Pro to 15.

What do you mean by allowing?

I've been with Apple since iOS 5 and I don't recall Apple ever forcing an automatic update on me. My iPhone 5 was on iOS 6.0.1 from late 2012 to around 2014 and my 6s+ was on iOS 9.0.1 from late 2015 to late 2020. That was simply because I didn't update the devices. Apple's allowing me to 'stay' had nothing to do with it. In fact they probably would have preferred I updated each time, but they didn't force me to.

They mean they will continue to release security updates for iOS 14 therefore not requiring you to update to iOS 15.

I use the word require because everyone should be on the latest version if they value their privacy/security.

They’ve always released critical updates for older software that can’t update to the latest.. but don’t expect more than 1 or 2 minor security updates for iOS 14 after iOS 15 is released.

“iOS now offers a choice between two software update versions in the Settings app. You can update to the latest version of iOS 15 as soon as it’s released for the latest features and most complete set of security updates. Or continue on iOS 14 and still get important security updates until you’re ready to upgrade to the next major version.”

Actually, their exact phrasing seems to be a bit different. Or maybe they've changed it in the meantime, possibly because they're having second thoughts about it.

My guess is, it will depend on how they implement the CSAM thing. They may continue to support it at least until CSAM comes to iOS 15. After that, they will either quietly sneak it into iOS 14 as well, disguised as a "security update", or they will stop supporting iOS 14. I don't think they will ever help you in any way to avoid the CSAM scan once it's up and running.

If we're lucky, this will be the first year they allow people on iOS 15 to downgrade back to iOS 14 any time during this year if they want for whatever reason.
This would be ideal and is what everyone has wanted since forever — but I'm not holding my breath it'll come true.

Would it put the final nail in your coffin to tell you the reason I didn't upgrade was because I was jailbroken (both phones)? :D

Yes, there have been upgrades for one older version, the version used on the iPhone 6. But as far as I know those with more current phones couldn't get them.
