I'm preordering my ipad tomorrow. I wanna be a part of the excitement and pick it up in-store on launch day, but would it be a mistake? Would I have to get there super early, or just show up like half an hour before it comes out and walk out of the store with my ipad within an hour? I would get it at the Manhasset store in Long Island, New York, if that helps.

I know when I went to pick up my iphone they had two lines going. One for pre orders and one for walkins. Both lines were long and they were giving priority to the pre order line.

Here is a trick I have used many times to make it hassle free. Save an extra $50 and bring it with you. Go to the front of the line and just offer it to someone to cut in front. Works every time and can save you hours of waiting.

I want two iPads so I will pre order one for delivery and go to the store on Sat with an extra $50. :)

thanks for the suggestion but i dont think im doing that haha
about how long would i have to wait if i show up half an hour early?

I don't expect this to be like the iPhone launch. There is no "activation" process to deal with. If anything, arrival at an Apple store more than an hour after opening will lead to going home empty handed because quantities on day one will probably be somewhat scarce. If you preorder there is no reason to avoid in-store pickup. I don't think I'd bother with the $50 idea. The lines really should move briskly until they run out. And besides, who is gonna accept $50 if it means they may have wasted a trip?

As stated before, the line should be quick since there is no activation process but who knows if their server's still may be bogged down. I've been going back and forth between delivery and instore pickup and finally decided for delivery. Where I live, there is one Apple store that must serve a lot, and I mean a lot, of people. On normal days, at any time of day, this Apple store is packed and you can't get service. I just don't think I can compete with this kind of madness that will be going on there.

So I'm certain you must give $50 to every other person in line that has been standing there for hours, right? That way you aren't screwing over 50 to 100 people when you walk up and cut?

I'm going to stand in line at the Apple store. I heard a rumor why might get a nice little gift at time of purchase. That would be real cool.:)

I remember when the first iphones came out. CNBC followed a woman who brought a LOAD of cash to an apple store. She gave the guy in front a couple hundred bucks for his spot. He had to leave the line (that way they didn't really screw anybody else). She then handed all her cash to the store rep and said she wanted as many iphones as she could have with that amount (her big plan was to sell them on ebay.). You should have seen the look on her face when the guy told her, sorry, lady, two per customer! The dude who gave up his spot, waited on the line and got to buy his iphone with the cash she gave him.....sorry, what was my point... oh, yeah, STAY OUT OF MY BOOZE!

Quoted for truth.

Same here! I want to be apart of the excitement, too! I've decided that it would be best that I pre-order it and camp out for the Fed Ex Truck to come:D
Then once I'm done opening it and messing around with it, I will drive to my Apple Store and hold it/show it off and buy a case while I'm at it. That solves the "being apart of the excitement" ;)

+1......................if i was a cop..........i would arrest you...........jk.......but this guy has a point.:D

I'm thinking about doing in store pick up. What a small worldI would be going to the Manhasset store on launch. I have no problem waking up a few hours early to line up.

I'm also debating in store vs delivery. Delivery would clearly be my first choice, as I'd love to save myself the 30 minute drive to the Apple Store, and waiting in annoying lines. I just have two concerns.

1) I'm worried about the package possibly not showing up on a Saturday. Do we think it's certain this will happen? I've heard stories in the past of pre-orders not showing up on day one in the past.

2) What if the in store "bonus" we've heard of is really cool? I doubt it will be, but what if it was? A t-shirt would not be my idea of cool.

What do you guys think?

In regards to Saturday delivery I'm not sure. Surely, with the release date being a Saturday, Apple will ensure they are delivered on Saturday.

Also, in regards to "reserving" for in store pickup, if one "reserves" an iPad for pickup, does one have to be there at the store opening to get your "reserved iPad? I work nights and it would have to be picked up mid afternoon on my way back to work. And finally, when "reserving" does one pay now or when it's picked up?

Thanks
David

I'm pre-ordering to pickup because FedEx home delivery here SUCKS! I have been hosed so many times by them here. The idea of having to rely on them for a Saturday delivery scares the living hell out of me. I could see them hosing it up and then having to try to re-deliver on Monday....when I'm at work. Catastrophe in the making.

This one is pretty easy for me. Delivery... The closes Apple store is 45min to an hour away.
