My contract is not up until July, 2011. If I pay the ETF ($175 minus $5/month of the contract to date (correct?)), what do I have to do to prepare the phone before selling the phone to another party? Simply perform: Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings? And then it will be good to go for the new owner? My phone is currently jailbroken, but I know I will have to restore it to get my info off.

I have a friend in the market and I could let them take over my account. Does AT&T allow this? Would there be any benefit to my friend? Or, does AT&T allow month to month at the same rate for those who have bought an iphone from a private seller?

I would just restore to a jailbroken IPSW depending on which firmware you are on (3.1.2, 3.1.3, etc). If you erase all content and settings, it might set them up to only being able to restore to a 3.1.3 firmware (unless they have a pwned IPSW), thus messing them up if they want it to be jailbroken, unlocked, etc.

Regarding the AT&T stuff, I'm not sure how that all works out, sorry :(

I don't care what the next owner wants re: jailbroken, etc. I want the phone restored to factory bone stock. Unless I need to unlock it to sell it? I really have no idea what is involved...

If you restore and assuming you're not already updated to 3.1.3 you wont be able to JB or unlock it.
So the buyer would only be able to use it on AT&T.

Shouldn't the new owner be dealing with jailbreaking/unlocking?

If you don't care about the next owner, go ahead and restore it through iTunes.

However, if you want to make more money I'd list it on Craigslist/Ebay as jailbroken/unlocked. If you take that route, you can erase all content and settings through the settings menu.

OK. So restoring at any point now will take phone to 3.1.3? Even if I have to do it, which I have had to, but not recently...

I am going to sell my phone and would like to know if i do a "erase all contents and settings" will that reset the phone usage time back to "0" as if the phone was never used? The person who is going to by it said that he can see how long the phone has been used? I would like it to appear as though the phone has never been used and talked on?

Would you be happy if you purchased a car which had it's odometer wound back to zero and sold as new even though it had travelled 10,000km?
