PrePaid iPhone 3G S

How many other people are using their iPhone 3G S with a prepaid SIM? I had the original iPhone gen 1 and upgraded to the 3G S.

The account deposit ATT asked me for to go post paid was higher than the $699 no contract price. So I went ahead and bought it no contract.

When I got home I just pulled the SIM out of my old iPhone and popped it into the 3G S. It said connect to iTunes to activate. I did and it activated with the prepaid SIM. The ATT rep INSISTED this would not work saying the iPhone only worked post paid. They are so full of crap. My 3G S is working fine prepaid.
 
I wonder if you'll get billed for the data service and/or even have data access?

On prepaid, pay-per-use data is taken out of your prepaid credit, just like voice minutes. If your prepaid credit reaches zero, your pay-per-use data is shut off.

You can also add a number of prepaid data packages at a fixed rate per month, but none of them are unlimited. After you use up the allotment for the month, you revert to pay-per-use data.

It is possible that the iPhone may come out of the box preconfigured to work with specific APN settings that are not available to prepaid users, but it is possible to override them to work with prepaid-compatible settings.
 
I use Pick Your Plan for the original iphone. I pay for unlimited data each month and 200 minutes. I don't care about signing a contract but I don't want to pay an $800 deposit as well as $299 for the phone.

I'm doing the same thing. Hopefully this fall I'll just go ahead and sign a contract. Shouldnt be that big of a deal seeing as how att seems to give in every year for the new iphone upgrade.

Pay per use data is like $10 for 1mb.

I cant find the unlimited data prepaid deal on ATT website. It says 100mb for $20.

Yes it's 3G speeds. I downloaded the speedtest.net iPhone app and ran some speed tests in downtown Manhattan. I'm getting 3G speeds.

I have pick you plan as well. Log into this website and check your pick your plan options. https://www.selfincharge.com/

Mine has the iPhone PYP data plan which is visual voicemail, and it has an unlimted data plan on the account along with unlimted texting. Has long as you have the two data plans on your pick your plan account you're good as far as data use.
 
Another note. I pulled the pick your plan SIM out of an old motorola phone and popped that into my 2G iPhone. I added unlimted data to the account and I can use edge on it without problems. The only thing that isn't working is visual voicemail which is likely due to missing the iPhone PYP data plan on the account.
 
I ran a speed test here in Brooklyn, NY. You can see Brooklyn speed sucks! I'll run another speed test when I'm in Manhattan tonight so you can see I'm getting 3G.

Here are speed tests done in Manhattan. I'm getting 3G speeds with the prepaid SIM.

i had a 1g iphone that i got pyp on since iphone DAY 1, i just recently was given a friends 3g and just swapped sims, and bam, 20$ unlimited 3g data!

Everything works awesome, the only thing im worried about is MMS. When they allow the iphone to MMS will they let PYP customers use MMS as well?
 
Isn't that amazing how the prepaid sims will activate an iPhone? :)

Even after a restore, the iPhone will activate just as it it were an iPhone sim. This is due to 3.0.

If you try using the same sim in a 3G or 2G iPhone running 2.2.1, the iPhone won't activate. If you install 3.0 on those phones, the iPhone will activate. Been there, done that!

I hope they don't break that with 3.1 firmware.

Not completely true! If you had a 1g PYP iphone and take out the sim, it will work on a 3g under 3.0 as well, the 3gs requires 3.0 so obviously you need 3.0 for 3gs
