Hi there

In 5 days me and my family are going to New York. We live in Europe.
In order not to pay the extremely high roaming price on our cell-phones when we call each other, I thought we could get us some prepaid SIM cards when we arrives.
But now I have read something about some new anti-terrorism laws making it impossible to do. Is this true? Or what? Can someone tell me how this works, and where the best place to buy, if possible, is?
Thank you.

Hm... I would think you could buy a cheap prepaid phone and use them... but I'm not 100% sure.

If you want the sim to *maybe* work in an iPhone, you'd have to get an AT&T goPhone, i think the cheapest are about $14. (I've heard AT&T coverage isn't very good in New York.)

If you just want a super cheap phone to use during the visit, then tracphone would probably be your best bet. (These go off Verizon & Tmobile towers, depending on the phone... so coverage might be better.)

You can buy them at Target/Walmart.

I see you can buy some prepaid sim cards online. But I've never noticed them in stores.

Thank you for your reply.
I have an iPhone 3G and my other family members have Nokia and Sony Ericsson. None of them are locked so any SIM who uses GSM will do.
So I think it would be better not to buy a prepaid phone, but a just a SIM card with some credit on it.
I was thinking something like this:
link.
Is it possible to buy at Walmart or Target?

I am in the US and have just done this (come from Australia).

I was told that unlike Europe and Australia you cannot buy a pre-paid SIM in the US. We bought a cheap AT&T Go-Phone and used that SIM. The only problem is unable to get data, as this is apparently locked to plans and not available on iPhones pre-paid.

I have started another thread trying to get around this problem.
