Preparing for Receipt of my 12.9

Ordered 6/8 and it is frustratingly delayed beyond their control with a pending delivery date. Anyway I am gifting my current 9.7" iPad Pro to my grandaughter. I will see her Sunday and since she lives an hour away, I think I will go ahead and give her the 9.7" then. Freaking over that!
I will make a backup and Erase All Content before giving since she has her own Apple ID. So in setting up my new 12.9", can I do this from the backup I make or does wiping the 9.7" eliminate the possibility if setting up a new ipad from your old one. Or am I forced to set it up as new?
Hey, this is all I can do, plan and worry since the 12.9" is stuck in Taiwan, LOL!
 
I would make an encrypted backup and use that to restore your new device. It will make the process fast and complete including passwords and health data. I use the cloud but still back up weekly with iTunes.

Thank you. So Encrypted backup means connecting to my mbp and going thru itunes to perform a backup? Pardon my ignorance but I have always backed up on the ipad itself. Does this itunes backup then mean I have to connect the new ipad to my mbp to set it up?
 
Cloud backups are also encrypted.

Install the latest version of iTunes on your laptop or allow iTunes to update to the latest version.

Connect iPad to laptop and do an encrypted backup via iTunes.

When new iPad arrives, connect to laptop and do a restore.

You should be good to go.

WARNING: You are wanting to reset your old device and give it away before you get your new device. I would not as there is a slight chance that something can go wrong with your backup and it can not restore to your new device. It does not happen often but if you can not use your "broken" backup you will have no way of recovering everything.

You can allow your iPad to back up to the cloud, too and then, if the worst happens, you can use the cloud to restore your device. It will do the same just take some extra time to do it depending on your WiFi speed.

Thanks, got it! And if worst happens, I can just go the really long way of setting up as new and loading from Purchased Apps. Now, if the 12.9" will just get beyond the delay exception in Taiwan!
 
For the iPad you are giving away, wipe it, connect to iTunes, and Set Up As New iPad. When you see the "Hello" screen on the iPad, stop, power down, and give that to your relative.

Your new iPad, just set it up as new. It will take ten minutes to download your apps. Another few minutes for books, contacts, emails. If you have tons of photos or video that will take a bit longer, but not too long. Then you'll have a fresh install on your new iPad, which is the best.
