Prepping a device to sell

I really don't sell off or give away devices and haven't done so since the factory reset protection Android introduced a few versions ago, so, how would one go about prepping such a device nowadays?

It's running Android 9 right now.

All you need to do is is remove your Google account from the phone prior to factory reset.

Go to Settings > Accounts & Sync > Google > and then select your account and remove it.

That should be all you need to do.

It depends on which phone you are selling.
Android
Go to settings then accounts...remove all accounts (important for Samsung phones)
make sure any sim cards or SD Cards have been removed,
Do a factory reset and erase all data....

Whats the importance of removing all accounts before factory resetting the device? I've sold a lot of phones and I never remove accounts first. Factory reset removes all accounts and erases all data.

Also, if you are selling online (ebay or swappa), make sure to take a "condition assessment" video (and photos) prior to shipping showing off the external condition as well as the phone functioning just to have a little proof in case the buyer tries to scam the system. If you have evidence, PayPal should be able to help protect you.

Whats the importance of removing all accounts before factory resetting the device? I've sold a lot of phones and I never remove accounts first. Factory reset removes all accounts and erases all data.

I recently sold my Pixel 3 on eBay and the new owner contacted me saying it was asking for the previous owners passcode. Apparently that wouldn’t have happened had I removed the Google account prior to factory resetting the phone.

Odd. That was a security feature that I believe was removed from Android back in 8.0. That’s why it asks for your password when you factory reset.

Don't listen to FUD. Better to be safe and make sure Google Device Protection/Factory Reset Protection (FRP) are inactive before transferring ownership.

I delete all apps I'm signed in to, sign out of all accounts I'm signed into and then check I'm not still logged in, delete all my pics & videos using a pc and then do a factory reset.

I know I'll get people saying it's not necessary to do all that but for the sake of an extra few minutes, I'd rather be thorough.

Exactly, after that as James said you need to remove that particular device from your google account.
